'Ant-Man' from the Comics to the Big Screen - Movie Review

PG-13. Running Time: 1hr 57min

Action, Adventure, Family

'Ant-Man' has jumped from the comics to the big screen and is directed by the mind-blowing style of Peyton Reed.  There is a whole new world opening up for moviegoers since Marvel’s Ant-Man’ kicked off in theaters on July 17, 2015.  If you haven’t yet watched this extraordinary movie, especially in RealD 3D or IMAX, you should add one of the most amazing and funny movies of all times on your list to watch this summer with family, friends, your date, or just yourself.  The Marvel Cinematic Universe brings to life a founding member of The Avengers for the first time from 50 years of 'Ant-Man' comics.   Marvel Comics first introduced Hank Pym/Ant-Man in 1962 in “Tales to Astonish #27” and later Pym appeared alongside The Avengers in the team’s debut in “Avengers #1” in 1963.  Are you ready to take a ride with the phenomenal world of Ant-Man’?

Marvel’s ‘Ant-Man’ stars Paul Rudd (“I Love You, Man,” “Role Models”) as Scott Lang/ Ant-Man; Evangeline Lilly (“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug,” “Lost”) as Hope van Dyne, daughter of Hank Pym; Corey Stoll (“House of Cards,” “The Bourne Legacy”) as Darren Cross/ Yellowjacket; Bobby Cannavale (“Chef,” “Blue Jasmine”) as Paxton; Michael Peña (“End of Watch,”“American Hustle”) as Luis; Tip “T.I.” Harris (“American Gangster,” “Identity Thief”) as Dave; Wood Harris (“Above the Rim,” “Remember the Titans”) as Gale; Judy Greer (“13 Going on 30,” “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”) as Maggie; David Dastmalchian (“The Dark Knight,” “Prisoners”) as Kurt; and Michael Douglas (“Behind the Candelabra,” “Wall Street”) as Dr. Hank Pym.

The audience around the world is more than ready to receive new comic characters on the big screen with different scenarios and challengers and of course magnificent Marvel-style action.  The remarkable success of “Guardian of the Galaxy” which mixed humor and action just like the newcomer film ‘Ant-man’ has showed that the world was ready for a change where quality, freshness, and the unexpected are part of the game inside the world of a superhero movie and success at the box office.  ‘Ant-Man’ is a movie very different from anything that has been ever made before, the thrill of the story is epic, and the psyche of the people involved in the superhero story deal with personal struggles.  ‘Ant Man’ isn’t a straight up comedy or action movie, but you can appreciate the mix of both which is terrific.  The themes of fatherhood, mentorship, and abandonment, play a big part in the relationships in Ant-Man.’  The story centers on Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Scott Lang’s newfound partnership and relationship as they struggle with the everyday challenges of being a good father and mentor.  Hank Pym  (Michael Douglas) is a scientist with a successful business and in the past he has saved the world, but unfortunately doesn’t provide his daughter Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) the emotional support that she needs after she tragically lost her mom.  On the contrary,  Scott  Lang ( Paul Rudd) is a lovely dad,  but he has made terrible choices in his life by being a white collar criminal and even with a college degree, but he doesn’t provide a healthy or safe environment to his precious daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson).

The fanbase is going to love the movie 'Ant-Man' with its incredible perspective of the physical and magical macro world never seen before, and above all the fascinating life of ants that are among the most delightful and complex creatures in the world.

The lead actor Paul Rudd had the great opportunity of exercising his writing skills by partnering with Adam McKay on a rewrite of the script. The actor was also able to dig into the character in a much deeper way and became more aware of the internal issues, decisions to get an understanding of his role as Scott Lang /Ant-Man.  Paul Rudd’s work as an actor is very diverse and have been divided between comedy and drama. He is indeed the perfect man to perform as Ant-man; he is very likable, goofy, attractive, and charismatic.

It’s really exciting to watch the passing of the torch between Hank Pym and Scott Lang in the film. Hank Pym was once Ant-Man, but as time went on he discovered that his technology was going to be weaponized and used for a lot of bad things, so he decided the best way to avoid the terrifying consequences was to hide the technology.  Pym became Ant-Man after discovering a chemical substance “the Pym Particle” that allowed him to alter his size and possess superhuman strength. With the development of another of Pym’s technologies,  Ant-Man also has the ability to control armies of ants.

“Armed with a super-suit with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, plan and pull off a heist that will save the world”

In the story the father/daughter issue is prevalent throughout the entire film. It’s really fascinating to observe a strong female character developed beautifully in the 'Ant-Man' film; Evangeline Lilly acts as Hope van Dyne who becomes a great role model for the female audience.

The villain in the film is incredibly performed by Corey Stoll as Darren Cross /Yellowjacket, Hank Pym’s former protege, Darren Cross, is a complicated man with deep emotional issues.

The movie was initially shot in the Silicon Valley of San Francisco with Pym Technologies, city never seen in any Marvel movie.  San Francisco is visually stunning. Following San Francisco, the production was settled into Pinewood Studios in Atlanta. 'Ant-Man' became the very first movie to film there.

The movie is fun to watch and the shrinking effect of Ant-Man is utterly astonishing. They used a combination of motion-picture and macro photography, still macro photography, motion capture with the actors, motion capture with stunt people, and then for every set they built miniature sets, called macro sets. When you watch Ant-Man running across a floor or running through a carpet, the textures really feel very tactile and extremely photorealistic.  The advancements in camera technology these days has lenses capable of capturing tiny images such as within ATM machines, within bathtubs, within the tile work of bathrooms, inside the tiniest of pipes creating a very exciting microcosm!

'Ant-Man' new movie from the Marvel Cinematic Universe is one of the most imaginative movies released in 2015  with a tremendous director, great cast, excellent VFX and original script. You are going to love this franchise for life and will stay in our hearts forever!
