Johnny Depp stars in the title role of “ Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." His role begins as a happily married man to a beautiful woman and father of an adorable young child. But in a flash, finds him separated far from his family and, years later, returns to seek retribution.
Who would have thought that Depp would star in a musical. Although he has pretty good vocals, it was just a little hard to grasp him breaking into song at any moment, but I adapted after a while. The problem was that I found the movie to be a little sluggish. Meaning, that I wanted more excitement as he sang. In most of the movie, when Johnny Depp went into song, I felt like I wanted to fast forward through his musical scene. But then, later, there was too much violent, bloody action during his singing performance, I had to cover my face.
However, Johnny Depp gave a fantastic, convincing performance as a "The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." His livid, dramatic horror English voice was perfect for his role. When he returned to find the man who stole his family, he clearly metamorphisized from a sweet family man into a demon character ready to taste his vengeance.
The most appealing character was Mrs. Lovett - the pie maker ( Helena Bonham Carter). Her love and admiration to Mr. Sweeney Todd made her his confidant. She has a great voice for musicals and also added a lot of humor to each performance.
The film’s producers are Richard D. Zanuck, Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald and John Logan. The executive producer is Patrick McCormick. The film is directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by John Logan. Music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, based on the Tony Award-winning musical “ Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street” by Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler originally staged by Harold Prince from an adaptation of “ Sweeney Todd” by Christopher Bond.
Sweeney Todd wasn’t a movie for me. Although it was good story with good acting, I think I would have enjoyed it more withought the music. My expectations were high and I had to adapt to this movie. Depp's his acting performance was fantastic and his singing was good. I’m just not sure he’s the musical kind-of-guy. This film has been rated R for graphic bloody violence. The gushing blood was too much for me and could have been toned down. This movie was dark, depressing, and too gory. It seemed a bit slow in the beginning and didn’t flow right for me. Many songs were just plain boring.
