Splash Magazines' Reports from the 2007 Tribeca Film Festival

As Splash Magazine's New York journalist, I received press credentials to The Sixth Annual Tribeca Film Festival recently held in lower Manhattan. The festival, for the press, lasted three weeks with a week of pre-festival screenings. It was a whirlwind of screenings, parties, celeb sightings and free popcorn supplied by founding sponsor American Express.

Hosted by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Peter Scarlet, the festival worked with Rubenstein Communications to ensure the success of this year's event. The collection of film submissions, 157 films with 48 countries represented, highlighted the incredible talent, desire, and future of the film industry.

For the press, The Lounge became the hub for all the festival happenings. Target department stores supplied the theme and the press supplied the attitude and atmosphere. If you needed information about the festival, and could not find it, someone at the press lounge could get it for you. There were meet and greets with Women Filmmakers, International Filmmakers, and Documentary Filmmakers. Press conferences, paparazzi, and more popcorn.

The Third Wave

By the end of the festival, I had seen ten percent of the films submitted, spoke with countless directors and filmmakers, met press from around the world, covered the red carpet and attended a metropolitan drive-in where cars are a thing of the past. I saw dedication to art unveiled in Central Park, dedication to humanity lived in Sri Lanka and dedication to faith questioned.

My Father My Lord

New talent was nurtured, discovered, and recognized and for me this year's Tribeca Film Festival birthed one new filmmaker as I received representation for a segment of my own 2007 Pulitzer Submission for my work in 2006 detailing a Police cover-up. Who knows, maybe next year I'll be the on the other side of The Gates.

So, its au revoir from the Tribeca Film Festival as Splash is off to France as the Cannes Film Festival welcomes the world.
