Santasia: A Holiday Comedy Review - A Refreshing, Comedic and Original Show

Santasia: A Holiday Comedy, is my theater "pick of the year" and a wonderful way to bring in the Holidays. You can’t help but get in the Christmas spirit after watching this award-winning show. This hilarious comedy is smart, funny, touching and even has a few stunts. Although Santasia is a family Christmas show, be aware that there is some strong language and adult situations.

Incorporated throughout the show, Santasia, a Loeser Kids Production, are multi-media Christmas video segments on a big screen, between live comedy sketches. The show's first video is a spoof of The Matrix, with Santa Claus as the Keanu Reeves “Neo” character.  The second video is a running gag spoof of the hit TV show “24”.  In this case, it’s December “24th”. Santa has fallen behind on his Christmas Eve delivery schedule, and it’s up to the President of the United States and Jack Bauer to put him back on track.

The hour and forty minute show is seamless and keeps you laughing out loud from start to finish. Santasia is the brainchild of two brothers, Shaun and Brandon Loeser, and is based upon their family Christmas memories growing up in Chicago. Everything takes a hit, from decorating the house, to opening presents Christmas morning and even the terrifying suicide toboggan run down the steepest hill in town.

The all male cast is picture perfect as they lead us through the comedy sketches and monologues, and even a surprise visit by Santa Claus himself! The solid ensemble is made up of Shaun and Brandon Loeser, Lon Gowan, Casey Hendershot, James Elden, Art Oden, Andrew J. Hills and Kris Kringle.
These guys work together like a well-oiled machine.

Some of the highlights include a “Good Fellows” parody where one of the elves is punished for his toy making. The three wise men bicker about who is giving baby Jesus the best present, and there is a hilarious slow motion snowball fight. Did I mention the guys do ballet to the "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies” in tutus? The biggest laughs in the show, however, come from a bit where Brandon Loeser plays a “Piano Bar” Diva.

It is truly a family affair, as other Loeser family members are involved in the production as well.  Shaun’s wife Tania did the choreography and costume design.  Brother Brandon designed the website, the sound design and was the video cinematographer and editor.  Shaun Loeser directed the stage show as well as the video segments.  This is one talented family!

Santasia is one of the most refreshing, comedic and original shows I've seen in a long time! But a word to the wise: you’d better get your tickets now, the remaining shows are selling out fast!  The clock is ticking…

Santasia is playing at The Whitefire Theater from November 29th through December 25th. The Whitefire Theater is also an official drop off center for Toys For Tots.
