For ten days in November, Los Angeles becomes indie film central with the American Film Market in Santa Monica and the AFI Film Festival in Hollywood. The American
Film Market (AFM) is a trade show where filmmakers meet with distributors to sell their films and projects. This year, beginning October 31, the 28th AFM will screen 522 feature films, many of them world premieres in what has become the largest intenational film market in the world. The AFM projects that over $800 million worth of deals for over 1,000 films will be sealed in eight days.
The AFM is headquartered at Loew's Hotel on Ocean Avenue. All eight floors are filled with the high-octane buzz of dealmaking.
o get an idea of the scope of the market, you only have to look at the film screening chart: From 9-5 every day for the first week in all the theaters at the Santa Monica 7, the Loews Broadway 4, the Fairmont Five, the Leammle's Monica, the Mann Criterion 6, and four screening rooms at Le Merigot. Toward the end of the market, the screenings taper off, as deals have been done and money's allocated for acquiring films have all been spent.
The AFM is run by the Independent Film & Television Alliance which created this event to further the very collaborative business that is independent motion picture production and distribution. More that 8,000 industry professionals from over 70 countries will converge on Santa Monica for eight days of deals, networking and parties. Although films will be screened, this is not a film festival for audiences with the price of a ticket. This is a marketplace where deals will be made on both finished films and future projects. The AFM is produced by the Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA), the trade association representing the world’s producers and distributors of independent motion pictures and television programs.
Thirty-six films screening at the Americean Film Institutes (AFI) Fest 2007 are represented at the AFM. Shuttle service between the Market and the Festival runs regularly.
