Did You Hear About the Morgans? I did and want to hear it again

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

Did You Hear About the Morgans?  I did and I would again.  This delightful comedy centers around Paul Morgan ( Hugh Grant) and Meryl Morgan ( Sarah Jessica Parker).  As a highly successful Manhattan couple who witnesses a murder, they are forced into the witness protection program.  The only hitch is the couple were separated and on the verge of divorce.  Paul, having had a fling for which he is now sorry, is desperately trying to get Meryl back.  She, on the other hand, is not so certain.  As an incurable romantic, she’s been robbed by some of her fantasies.

Meryl is, at first, very reluctant to leave her business until the contract killer, Vincent, ( Michael Kelly)  finds her and threatens her. Then it’s decided that the couple must flee.

They end up in small town, Rye, Wyoming where they are hosted by Emma Wheeler ( Mary Steenburgen) and her husband, Sheriff Clay (Sam Elliot).  Earthy and realistic, they are the farthest from the neurotic busy New Yorkers that one could imagine.  It’s the no nonsense Emma that teaches Paul how to chop wood and how to shoot a gun.

The couple find that slowing down the pace of their lives, and being completely out of their comfort zones, forces them concentrate on themselves and as a result to rekindle the passion.  They learn some lessons by watching Clay and Emma relate and realize that there is more to life than Blackberries.

The town has to get used to these new strangers as well and it’s not so easy in the case of Earl Granger ( Wilford Brimley) who owns the only restaurant in town.  His granddaughter played by Gracie Lawrence proved that she could be a great singer.

When Paul is threatened by a bear ( Big Bart), the couple attend the local doctor where Meryl makes the fatal mistake of phoning someone back in New York.  The call gets tracked back to the killer who has tapped the phone of Jackie Drake ( Elizabeth Moss), Meryl’s secretary.  Adam Feller ( Jesse Liebman) Paul’s assistant, urges Jessie not to call that number but she does and hence begins the killer’s chase to find the couple.

When the killer finds them, it is Paul’s willingness to go all out and protect his wife that really convinces her she belongs with him.

It’s rated PG-13 for some sexual references and momentary violence but it’s really not enough to worry about.  Those of us who are in or have been in relationships can definitely appreciate the humor.  When Meryl says to the Marshall that she doesn’t know if she can commit to a life with her husband, the Marshall says, “I hear that.”

Besides New York City, the western location is New Mexico.

The film is presented by Columbia Pictures in association with Relativity Media – a Castle Rock Entertainment/Banter Films production.

It’s written and directed by Marc Lawrence and produced by Martin Shafer and Liz Glotzer.  Executive Producers are Anthony Katagas and Ryan Kavanaugh.  Director of Photography is Florian Ballhaus.  Production Designer is Kevin Thompson.  Editor is Susan E. Morse, A.C.E.  Co-Producer is Melissa Wells.  Costume Designer is Christopher Peterson.  Music by Theodore Shapiro.

Hugh Grant especially liked the fact that the writer was the director. “The fewer authorities  in the film production, the better,” he says.

Released on December 18th, 2009, it’s a fun romantic comedy to watch.   For more information go to www.didyouhearaboutthemorgans.com
