For Fall 2013, Reem Acra was influenced by her recent travels to Japan where she found a book by artist Daidō Moriyama, which featured abstracts of the female body in fishnet stockings. The former Asian influence set a foundation for the collection’s silhouette with kimono coats, mandarin collars, and draped dresses; while the latter served more as an inspiration for layering fabrics and combining prints. The designer who is widely known for her eveningwear and red carpet gowns continued to show looks for day and night, albeit with an unadulterated emphasis on glamour; only 4 of the 35 looks included trousers. But then again who said that glamour must be restricted to evening hours?
The collection was predominantly black with a few prints (optic, fishnet), tweeds (diamond), and plaids (Prince of Wales) as well as hints of red, ivory, pewter, and silver, which shifted the focus on silhouette, textures, and the collection’s layered effect. Employing about 20-25 fabrications throughout the collection, each look paired crepe, fur, cashmere, suede, lace, or leather for a mesh overlay almost weaving together a new fabric, evoking that same balanced tension portrayed in Mr. Moriyama’s work.
Pat McGrath created a strong beauty look to compliment the collection’s moodier palette with a strong brow and subtly smoky eye, finishing the face with a deep shade of scarlet on the lips. Didier Malige for René Furterer started with a deep left side part before slicking back the sideswept bangs into a sleek, low ponytail, which was braided and twisted up at the nape. Gina Edwards for Essie used the Japanese flag as inspiration, blending three colors for a lacquered red nail.
My favorite looks from the Reem Acra Fall 2013 Ready-to-Wear Collection included: the black embroidered mandarin collar dress with fox fur stole; the black mandarin collar silk crepe dress with red and black ombré goat hair coat; the black long sleeve suede dress; the black mandarin collar twist front leather dress; the black open side wool sheath dress with asymmetric caplet; the leather trimmed mandarin collar lace and mesh draped dress; the black embroidered gown with fishnet overlay; and the silver beaded gown with black boucle cape.
