Drawing inspiration from the Mars Rover mission, Nanette Lepore’s Fall 2013 collection was fun and quirky with a galactic edge. Utilizing social media to garner coverage and excitement, Lincoln Center was already abuzz with sneak previews sent across twitter by the designer using #NanetteOnMars. Complete with a countdown until takeoff for the show, the space collection took off like a rocket.
The collection was full of futuristic silhouettes straight out of Star Trek, using fabrics that retain their shape to give structure and comfort to the pieces. There was a heavy emphasis on warm outerwear ranging from trenches with leather accents to cropped fur jackets with motocross silhouettes. Mesh cutouts and edgy insets added some edge to an otherwise feminine collection. Asymmetrical neck lines on flirty dresses also gave way to the Mars mission.
Watercolor prints and florals were grounded with deep olive and midnight violet solids. One print seen throughout the collection was meant to emulate a slice of planet Earth mixing greens and blues in a funky graphic. The earthy prints were juxtaposed by a lava red rose print reminiscent of the color associated with Mars.
Iridescent accessories took the metallic trend to the next level using holograms in shades of blue and fuchsia. Shoes, bags and belts were all coated in the cool leather complementing the watercolor prints and olive green. These easily wearable accessories will certainly be very popular regardless of a fashionista’s proximity to NASA.
Nanette managed to create a collection worthy of a space odyssey without looking like costumes. The clothing pushed the boundaries while remaining current and on trend. The extra terrestrial inspirations proved to be just the shock that Lincoln Center needed to send the social media world into a tizzy. Who knew landing on Mars could be so fashionable?
