Monique Lhuillier Spring 2015 Collection Review – Painting the Sunrise in Luminous Shades

The time is sunrise. The sky fills with pastels. A canvas of soft hues - pinks, lavenders, pale yellows that mix with light sky blues and mint greens.  Beautiful is the word. Monique Lhuillier’ s Spring 2015 Collection is the vision.

Monique Lhuillier travels extensively. In the sky. Which is when she witnesses the pre-dawn moments before sunrise. And her imagination moves. Shaping the magnificent gowns. Like clouds of couture shifting. Into the next jewel of a design.

Starting with about 70 designs, Monique Lhuillier narrows them down - to 42 for her Spring 2015 Collection. Backstage she was asked repeatedly for a favorite. But she could not further reduce. The entire collection is her sky. All the clouds of dresses and designs belong together in this shimmering sunrise.

I have some favorites. Love the pale yellow dress that bursts onto the runway like a golden ray. Love the glittering mint green floor length gown that took my breath away with a sun rising pattern of sequins across the front. Love the lavenders. With the Koons-like floral shapes. Purple heaven. And love the pinks.  Especially the rose silk ones. Delicate. Floating.

The models all wore long straight hair. Creating a doll-like impression. It worked within the show well as this singular look kept the focus on the designs. Koons-like glitter shapes adorned the sides of the eyes. Adding to that doll look. The musical selection featured chimes, continuing the wind and sky theme. Again, the sounds secondary to the visuals. The shoes were also designed by Monique Lhuillier. A perfect Cinderella match. It felt a little like watching one of those wind up boxes come to life. Does that ever happen? Trust me. On the runway in Monique Lhuillier’s Spring 2015 collection it did.

Monique Lhuillier is an art inspired designer as well as an avid art collector. And paying homage to her favorite artist Jeff Koons, her Spring 2015 collection merged these two worlds into a mix of fashion art  - both in some of the floral shaped sequins affixed to her gowns and in a dazzling display at the conclusion of her runway show when thousands of translucent confetti flower cut outs rained down on the models in a moment of magic. Pure fantasy. Koons would love.

Her husband and CEO Tom Bugbee enjoy also enjoys their expanding collection of art, including Jason Martin’s textures and colors, in their Los Angeles home. They met while Monique was a student at the Fashion Institute for Design and Merchandising and when they were planning their wedding in 1995, Monique could not find that perfect wedding dress. So she decided to go into this fashion niche and the rest is industry history. Monique Lhuillier is it in terms of couture wedding gowns. And brides worldwide are beyond grateful. One of them came backstage to personally express her feelings to Monique. It was touching. The dress credited with creating a fairy tale wedding on that bride’s dreamy day. Monique warmly listened and embraced the moment.

Monique Lhuillier exudes sunshine. She has a warm and open disposition. No rain clouds on her horizon. A truly delightful person, she is approachable and surrounds herself with the best on every level. Her group of long-term friends stood smiling nearby. They told me that they knew her from way back – when she started in the Philippines under the guise of her fashionable mother. Not surprising that her circle now also includes dressing Halle Berry, Reese Witherspoon, Drew Barrymore and even the First Lady Michelle Obama. And maybe…me one day too. In luminous shades. Of pink. Or even lavender. Wait. Or that pale yellow. Who wouldn’t want to be clothed in the most beautiful sunrise collection in the sky of fashion? Part of the painting. The strokes of a genius. Monique Lhuillier. Spring 2015.
