Stylist and Fashion Editors gathered at the beautiful Hudson hotel for the debut of designer Laquan Smith’s Spring 2013 collection. The sprawling garden rooftop consisted of lush greenery and plush cabana chairs that set the stage for the highly anticipated debut. Most would consider Laquan Smith a budding designer with only two years in the industry; however, he has managed to solidify his position as a talented designer with celebrity clientele.
The attendees included Celebrity Stylist / TV Personality June Ambrose, Urban Video Model / Beauty Entrepreneur Keyshia Ka'oir and “A Belle in Brooklyn” Author Demetria Lucas.
Known for flamboyant, bold and feminine pieces, the SS/2013 presentation remained true to the brands identity. Models appeared wearing brightly colored dresses in jersey knit and two piece pairings that were exotic yet edgy.
The body conscious garments ranged from swimsuits, peek-a-boo lace, high-waist pencil skirts, hot pants and trendy torso-baring tops in vibrant neon colors.
This season Smith used his travels for inspiration. “This collection is like a rebirth for me. I have traveled to Botswana, Lagos, Nigeria, the British Virgin Islands and Jamaica all in the past few months. Traveling always inspires me from the people I meet to the food to the scenery. The collection is honoring those tranquil places around the world that we often take for granted.” Moved by landscaping he named the collection “Beau Jardin” which means “beautiful garden” in French.
His globetrotting adventures and time spent in Jamaica were evident in the colors of the garments that were reminiscent of underwater coral.
There is no denying that Smith creates garments for the self-assured woman that is courageously sexy and bold in her fashion decisions.
