There has been a resurgence of the arts and crafts movement in fashion over recent seasons. We’ve often seen reworkings of macramé and architectural knits, but for Spring 2013, Hervé Leger by Max Azria encapsulated a slice of Americana. Focusing more on updated patchworks, specifically those inspired by a quilting bee in Boykin (also known as Gee’s Bend), Alabama, this season the collection transitions from Fall 2012 retaining subtle equestrienne references while overlapping with the stunning pattern-play and geometry of quilt making. Referencing the Gee Bend Quilting Bee, the Hervé Leger by Max Azria Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear Collection depicts “a portrayal of feminine strength” with 32 new looks for the season.
Named for James Gee, a landowner who settled along the Alabama Riverin the early nineteenth century and later formed an African American sewing community, this quilting bee’s pastoral works of art retell the period’s oral history within their dynamic and imaginative sartorial weavings. These works have been featured in several fine arts exhibitions, most notably New York’s famed Whitney Museum of American Art. Celebrated for their signature body conscious silhouette, this season Max and Lubov Azria have “bended” the bandage dress and “rewoven” the collection with embroideries, appliqués, and graphic color-blocking reminiscent of those beautiful quilts.
The palette remained predominantly neutral with shades of black, carbon, tan, and alabaster, but was punctuated by hints of apricot, sapphire, and multi-colored patchworks. For beauty notes Laurent Philippon for Bumble & Bumble created a deep right side part with the hair pulled over the left shoulder. Val Garland and the Temptu Pro Team kept the make-up soft and gently sun kissed, with a pink lip, delicately highlighting the forehead and cheekbones. Dresses and playsuits were accessorized with snakeskin booties, leather harnesses, and clutches.
My favorite looks from the Hervé Leger by Max Azria Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear Collection included: the pearl blue and carbon bandage geometric dress with jacquard detail, black leather belt, ankle strap bootie, and clutch; the manila and black bandage color blocked dress, black leather corset harness, bootie, and clutch; the black and bare bandage flare dress with smock detail, black leather front neck harness, and bootie; the bare and multi bandage printed chain-interlaced dress with black snakeskin bootie; and the alabaster and bare bandage flare dress with passementerie appliqué with tan leather belt, and snakeskin bootie.
