New York based fashion designer, Catherine Malandrino’s Fall 2013 Collection entitled, “Le Normandie”, was inspired by the Art Deco period in her native country of France. The designer also drew inspiration from the elegant lines created by Ruhlmann, the infamous furniture designer from the Art Nouveau era. The collection was showcased in a large warehouse perfectly featuring the clean and feminine silhouettes decorated with abstract cutouts and geometric patterned embroidery. Warm colors like absinthe, burgundy and midnight blue were alternated with neutrals like nude and black for a rich look. There was an emphasis on ample outerwear and figure hugging dresses with pantsuits littered in between. Texture was a key ingredient in this collection, with black rubberized wool, black lizard embossed fabrics, intricate embroidery and loads of lush velvet.

Basic black was given an update using various textures and finishes

Standouts included a floor length dress with horizontal stripes of embroidered patterns and a black lizard embossed pencil skirt that hit mid calf for an elongated silhouette. While featuring the striped trend, the alternating embroidered patterns created an interesting twist that’s equally flattering on an hourglass figure. Using lots of trendy leather for this fall, Catherine Malandrino mixed it up a bit using black lizard embossing and embroidery on leather as well. Leather and velvet were new and interesting as they were cut into geometric shapes and laid out on nude dresses to give the impression of being rather unclothed. The chic designer’s take on the leather trend is equal parts feminine and tough.

Gorgeous black and bordeaux frocks in silhouettes reminiscent of the flapper era were flirty and chic

The designer gave outerwear new proportions with funnel necks, capes and hooded trench coats. Malandrino wanted comfort to be key, so dropped shoulders were implemented to give more wiggle room while remaining stylish. The funnel neck was also used to help create a more elongated look for everyday women.

Sexy nude dresses adorned with black leather appliques in geometric shapes were a highlight of the show

Malandrino also implemented her handbag collection featuring over sized totes with plenty of room for any girl on the go. The totes were just as embellished as the clothes with leather appliqués in abstract patterns.

The darker shades mixed with black embroidery and appliquéd leather will be perfect for any city girl come this fall. And the warm and chic outerwear will surely keep you warm from the elements without sacrificing style. The Catherine Malandrino Fall 2013 Collection was an edgy yet feminine mash up perfect for any city chic gal with a penchant for deco designs.
