“You can close your eyes and envision beautifully dressed, bejeweled and coiffed women on the terrace of the Grand Casino talking, smoking, sipping champagne and touching up their lipstick while their handsome escorts, in black tie, gambled inside.” So set the stage at Midtown’s St. Regis Penthouse Ballroom, re-envisioned as a 1960’s seaside resort in Deauville, France for the Dennis Basso Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear presentation. Unveiling 24 new looks, the collection focused on elegant evening wear. Luxurious furs and exquisite embellishments remained signatures throughout the collection, but this season employed a new playfulness, both in silhouette and palette.
“My inspiration for this collection is the glamorous seaside of Deauville, France, where the finest families and high society gathered each spring and summer.” Known as the Riviera of Paris, according to the liner notes the 60’s were a special time at this fabled resort, when women dressed for dinner and each evening was truly a gala.
While the color scheme felt appropriately black-tie in shades of white, champagne, and black; metallic hints of rose gold, soft pale yellows, cool ice blues, and more vibrant sapphires injected the collection with a whimsical modernity. Chiffon, silk organza, lace, and point d’esprit as well as dyed-to-match broadtail, sable, and chinchilla yielded strapless, illusion necklines, cap sleeve, halter gowns and cocktail frocks paired with stunning trenches and capelets. Beyond an innovative use of color, texture was also a vital component this season; fringe, feathers, tassels, and tulle added an element of nostalgic refinery to flouncy skirts, column gowns, and luxurious trains.
My favorite looks from the Dennis Basso Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear Collection included: the metallic and lace rose gold gown; the champagne hand embroidered ombré tulle gown with sable and lace capelet; the silver and champagne lace dress with champagne and gold broadtail trench; the black point d’esprit lace gown; the black hand embroidered lace dress with sable and lace capelet; the black hand embroidered fringe gown; and the metallic blue-lavender hand embroidered cut ostrich feather dress with pewter tassel clutch.
