French for ‘high fashion’, haute couture refers to the creation of exclusive custom-fitted garments, utilizing a high level of instruction in specific techniques. Moreover, the title is reserved for designers approved by Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Until now, only two design houses in the United States have been extended the privilege of showing in Paris. Perhaps with the recent induction of Academy of Couture Art as 23rd on the list of top 50 design schools in the world, American Couture Designers will show an increased influence in high fashion.
Independently established by Sonia and Thierry Été, the Academy of Couture Art in Los Angeles “provides an exclusive education in haute couture technique and design formerly unavailable outside of the leading European fashion houses.” Pieces handcrafted by students involved a team effort on the part of designer, pattern maker, and embellisher. Each individual becomes exceptionally talented in an art form of design while encompassing the whole process through in-depth four year programs specializing in pattern making to handcrafted lace and beading. The techniques gifted at ACA are the extensive efforts developed by Ms. Été herself; who spent several years developing her knowledgeable repertoire in Paris.
Amongst Bachelor of Arts (Fashion Design) graduates were names to be recognized in the immediate backdrop of premier fashion houses around the world – with the honed potential to break out in prolific self established lines. Maxfield Freiermuth, Sarah Kim, Mariana Romero Tejeda, and Angela Wu presented stunning thesis collections circumventing both focus and innovation that added to their resume a set of revolutionist garments each pricing themselves well into the thousands of dollars per item.
The Academy of Couture Art congratulated senior graduates with the 2nd annual fashion show and its recent establishment of an Honorary Board of Directors. Two names demonstrating the international impact of ACA are Her Royal Highness Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark and Her Excellency Michelle Czernin von Chudenitz und zu Morzin, both in attendance at Le Rêve Gala.
Each student demonstrated a distinct flair for perfection in high fashion through the creation of solid collections, a statement of their noteworthy craftsmanship and personality as a designing force to be reckoned with. One exceptional highlight was the presentation of global program involving the Monaco Charity Film Festival. In honor of the Principality of Monaco and under the personal direction of ACA Founder Sonia Ete, students Katherine Enyart, Maxfield Freiermuth, Ciara Green, Sarah Kim, Rachel Nourmand, Margaret Roberts, Mariana Romero Tejeda, Raquel Van Daalen Wetters and Angela Wu created the Grace Kelly Collection stunning in silk lace up corsets and double layer silk skirting.
