Toni Maticevski Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collection Review — Red Carpet Ready

For Toni Maticevski’s Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collection, all that glitters was indeed gold. The Melbourne, Australia native, unveiled his presentation of 28 looks at Chelsea’s Altman Building. Dramatically embellished evening ensembles mostly offered red carpet-worthy gowns and separates ideal for an onslaught of after parties come the next awards season. From the sculptural and draped to the romantic and elegant, Mr. Maticevski modernized his fairy tale silhouette with tiers of tulle layers and organza panels.

With a somewhat subdued palette of grey, pale blue, cream, beige, and black, silhouette and design details took center stage. The proportions tended to create either a great sense of movement with flowing pleated overlays, cut away dresses, and contrasting front drapes or a molded hourglass frame with pleated mini panniers, fitted dresses, and spliced tube skirts. The young designer even managed to make polka dots feel glamorous. Oversized jackets and sequin ponchos were the modern touches that offset more delicate shapes, balancing lace draped and pleated skirts. Asymmetry and paneling added a layer of architectural visual interest to this collection. Embellishment was a key component; peacock feathers, metallic appliqués, and gilded embroidery bedecked the bodice, shoulder, waist, or hip.

Antique silks and lace gave the pieces a vintage perspective. Mr. Maticevski fearlessly blended patterns and textures, pairing a polka dot silk chiffon necktie blouse with a sequin silk drape skirt and juxtaposing a menswear tweed oversized wool jacket against an ethereal leaf print pin tucked skirt. Additional standout looks included: a silk tulle and organza skirt with mini dress of pleated silk and raw crystals; the black embroidered top with splice tube skirt and pleated hipster accessory; a black embroidered bauble one piece drape evening gown; the silk two-tone embroidered blouse, black tube pencil skirt and cropped wool jacket with back flute; a old gold bias evening skirt with pleat sectors and black top and peacock feather sequin bra accessory; and a black mesh top with a two tier evening skirt. Adorned with gold leaves, flowers, and stars, it was as though the Toni Maticevski Fall 2010 Ready-to-Wear Collection was sprinkled with a hint of fashion fairy dust.
