Fall 2007 - Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week LA thru the years

  • Fall 2007 LA Fashion Week Coverage is only days away.
  • What will Los Angeles fashion designers present?
  • Will their designs be a play on Europe?
  • Or will we again see more 'LA Haute Couture' on our runways?

LA Fashion Week--or the longer official name, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Los Angeles www.mbfashionweek.com --is less than a week away and as press we now select which shows we want to cover. Often it is a two way street: one, what we want to view and two, whether the designer wants you to view his or her collection. With Los Angeles about to begin its 9th Fashion Week, it has been a quite a ride for me as a fashion critic to witness the expansion of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week since Fern Mallis, Executive Director, 7th on Sixth/IMG made her 'coming to LA'  press announcement on the rooftop of the Standard Hotel in October, 2002.

According to the March 1, 2007 Media Alert from 7th on Sixth/IMG, 'the producers of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week LA announced the first round of designers for the upcoming Fall 2007 Collections, to take place in the event's hub, Smashbox Studios in Culver City.  The designers announced include 2(x)IST, AJ Jeans by Anand Jon, Alvin Valley, Anthony Franco, Collection Bebe, Christian Audigier, Dina Bar-El, Ed Hardy, Grail, Imitation of Christ, Juan Carlos Obando, Joseph Domingo, Kevan Hall, Literature Noir, Monarchy Collection, Oligo Tissew, Rami Kashou, Samora, Sue Wong, Tart, Thrive and Voom by Joy Han". Over the years, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Los Angeles has grown in more ways than one.

The event, which has grown significantly in recent years, has endeavored to retain the professional atmosphere of fashion weeks around the world while also taking advantage of its Los Angeles home and sensibility.

This season the event will make a few changes, including reducing in size and capacity of some venues, moving the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Design Suites, which have historically happened off site into the Smashbox Studios complex, focusing the event schedule into the afternoon and evening and limiting the number of standing room guests allowed into the venue.

'We are excited to grow Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at Smashbox Studios,' says Smashbox Chief Creative Officer Davis Factor.  'And with growth comes refinement, this season we took stock of the event and realized there are a number of changes that need to be made, this season and in future seasons.'

One of the changes that I have already noticed was the press guidelines on the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week LA  www.mbfashionweek.com web site. There seemed to be more lines to read as I made my way thru the red tape. Once at the venue in a few days, I'll see what other changes the producers have decided upon. I do remember the "strictly by invitation" signs that were posted by the entrance to The Tent at Smashbox Studios last season.

On a different note, I also have a change of my own as it relates to my press affiliation. Since the start of my press coverage on Fashion Weeks in LA, I was on assignment for Pursuit Magazine www.pursuit.co.za South Africa as their LA Correspondent. For Fall 2007, I'll be covering some shows for LA Splash Magazine www.lasplash.com

Review: Spring 2005, Pursuit Magazine

For Fall 2007, the Design Suites will be at Smashbox Studios, no more viewing these lines off-site - what a treat! The Design Suites, which traditionally are a forum for clothing and accessories lines to complement the runway shows, will include Andy the Anh, Dean Alan, The Dina Collection, DRES, Ema Savahl Couture, EXEX Jewelry, Kswiss, Fenix, Jennifer Rose Jewelry, JeTalia, La Chica Chic, LAI, Lo-Fi, Melly M, Mimi Turner, Mineral, Rockstyle, SBG Designs, Vanessa Carreno, Von Dutch, Wifebeader and Zandra Rhodes this season.

I can not wait to see what LA's fashion designers will be showing in Tinseltown for Fall 2007 and work alongside Splash Magazines Worldwide. I had the pleasure of meeting some of their affiliates at a "Readers/Journalists Appreciation Night" a few weeks ago at Tengu, Santa Monica  - Its a Wrap, Veronica Viljoen.
