Travel in Italy is not only about sights but about the tastes of the country's food and wine. But whereas an individual diner can try several dishes in a meal, the same lone voyager often has to be content with the house wine by the glass. A couple might be able to finish a single bottle of a more refined wine, but that bottle would have to be the one wine they choose to accompany every dish of the meal from antipasto to dessert.
The St. Regis Grand Hotel in Rome and its restaurant, Vivendo, have a program they call the 'Wines of Italy' to give such diners the chance to taste a greater variety of fine Italian wines and so to be able to select the perfect complement to each course of their meal. Diners and hotel guests can order by the glass instead of by the bottle some of the best vintages from a selection of 32 labels that represent every wine region of Italy. The following is a rundown of each wine by region and label, with a short description of the characteristics of each.
