Los Angeles Wine Tasting Event: Dali and Flamenco on Sunset

"There is only one difference between a madman and me.  The madman thinks he is sane.  I know I am mad."  Salvador Dali

As an avid art lover and traveler, I was strolling through the streets of Paris when I first experienced the work of Salvador Dali. I stumbled upon a small exhibit of some of his earlier works. I was intrigued to discover that when he was around the age of six, he was walking along and noticed a decomposing bug on the sidewalk. The shell of the bug was deteriorating, so he could see a glimpse of grass growing through a sliver in the sidewalk. In his young mind, he had the profound appreciation to notice the art of life growing beyond something that was dead to the world’s eye. As an artist, he was so moved by this singular moment, that it influenced him throughout his life and this juxtaposition is seen in most of his paintings of viewing life through something dead.

Needless to say, I'm a huge Dali fan. When I heard about this event, naturally it piqued my curiosity. So I hopped in the car and drove 200 miles (one way) just to attend.

The Luxe Sunset Hotel was the background for The Dali-themed event, hosted by Los Angeles Wine Tasting and sponsored by Los Angeles Magazine. The event served as a fundraiser for the Movember Foundation, a global charity focusing on men’s health.

The venue combined eclectic food and vibrant wines from La Vinyeta winery from the Empordà appellation, Catalonia, located just across the French border from Dali's land. Chef Olivier Rousselle (executive chef of Luxe Sunset who cooked for the Queen Mother)created gourmet Spanish tapas. Guests moved to the beats of Subsuelo, a Flamenco group.

Guests explored the fantastic world of Salvador Dali with an exclusive exhibition and silent auction of his artworks presented by the Andrew Weiss Gallery.  For over 40 years, Andrew Weiss has specialized in collecting 20th century master art from Dali, Picasso, Miro, and Renoir for private clientèle & galleries around the world. They also hold prestigious auction events at famous houses like Christie's and Sotheby's. Weiss is a third generation art dealer & a founding member of the IFAA, International Fine Art Appraisers.

It was the kind of event that I think Dali himself would have loved to attend. For a calendar of upcoming events, visit lawinetasting.com
