International Film Festival of Patmos - A Celebration of Cinema and Culture

 

The 4th International Film Festival of Patmos (IFFP) took place July 24th - 30th 2014 on the magical Greek island Patmos. The seven day festival hosted several screenings, seminars, music events and workshops. IFFP perfectly combines the natural beauty of Patmos with the celebration of cinema, and serves as an ideal meeting point for filmmakers, artists and creators from all over the world.  This year the festival lineup included 10 feature films, 40 short films and 17 documentaries. Films were screened under the stars of the open air cinema and in a UNESCO protected school. Several industry panels and seminars were conducted at the luxurious hotel Patmos Aktis.

The festival kicked off with opening film, Life in the Borderlands, a modular project that consists of separate short portraits from different characters of the island of Patmos. The film was created under a workshop that was held last year by IFFP. It is a co- production of SUGARHIGH FILMS and OTE TV, which supports the festival for the second consecutive year. This year the SUNDANCE CHANNEL supported IFFP as a proud media sponsor.

 

 

 

 

Movies like, the Academy Award Winning film, Her by Spike Jonze, Paolo Sorrentino’s masterpiece La Grande Bellezza (The Great Beauty), The Zero Theorem by the exceptional Terry Gilliam and the romantic The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson, were screened, to name a few. In addition, Mikra Agglia (Little England) awarded three times by the Shanghai Film Festival, by Pantelis Voulgaris was presented. Both director and script writer of the film, Ioanna Karistiani attended the festival.

 

 

 

This year the IFFP had a special tribute to women filmmakers, entitled “Women’s Cinema”. Acclaimed British filmmaker Joanna Hogg, award winning British producer, Rebecca O’brien, Greek - Italian actress and director Valeria Golino, and director of the film From Tehran to London, Mania Akbari, traveled to Patmos and participated in the panel. They spoke about their work and the challenges they faced throughout their careers.

Important film industry professionals such as the Argentinean screenwriter and director, Santiago Amigorena and Danish producer Tivi Magnusson were also invited and shared their experiences.

 

In order to support young filmmakers, the 4th International Film Festival of Patmos invited screenwriters and directors to take part in the script competition Fade In. There were over 400 submissions judged by prominent individuals in Greek cinema such as Tassos Boulmetis and producer Alexandra Bousiou.

Jacqueline Letzou won the script competitionwith the script Luz and it will be made into a short film co-produced by OTE TV and IFFP. The film will also be screened at next year’s festival!
