This is why, this is why, this is why everybody stares at Vanity Society, we stare because he has style, he has class and most he has talent. He walks into a room representing NY. Everybody gathers around him shouting out Vanity you are hot!!! Vanity Society is a millinery and accessories designer who's clearly focused on his style. He is perceptive, innovative, creative and is sweet as sugar and if that's not enough, he is also sensitive when approached. MMMMMHHHHHMMM oops sorry Readers didn't mean for my fingers to tap off the subject ; ) When you are in Vanity's presence you will find he speaks intelligently, literate and is high on life. Mirror mirror on the wall please tell me if I am reflecting off of society's vanity when talking to the very seductive and provocative sex symbol Vanity Society.

Hey Mr. I have style, I have grace, standing out of the crowd getting noticed. What is your imagination fantasizing about today?

Vanity
Hi David, thanks for the flattering introduction. From one Prince to another, you are quite sexy yourself.
What am I fantasizing about today? Hmm...well, my mind is usually all over the place and today is no exception. I have many events quickly approaching that I am thinking about but there is one of particular note that is front and center on my mind. As you are probably already aware, on 26 of March 2011 at the "Marriott Marquis" in Times Square, I shall be crowned Emperor XX of the "Imperial Court of New York" during our twenty-fifth annual "Night of a Thousand Gowns." We have had more Empress's than Emperors and mine, Pepperica Swirl shall be Empress XXV. I have a lot to plan and design for the gala and will probably be working on it right up to the final moment. It is a very glamorous event and I would love for you to be there!

David
( I will come if you dress me up : ) Congratulations on being newly elected Emperor of the "Imperial Court of New York". How does having that title make you feel and what does it mean to you?

Vanity
It is an honour to be given the title of Emperor. To wear the crown and represent the ICNY and all the good that we do for those in need. There are a great many organizations that we raise money for and give our support to. I am very happy to help in any way that I possibly can and would continue to do so even without the crown on my head. Although I certainly respect and support all of our beneficiaries, I am partial to those focusing on our youth...our future. It is difficult enough as adults to get through the stresses of daily life. For GLBT youth coming to terms with his or her sexuality, life can seem even harder. The desire for love and acceptance, dealing with peers and family, searching for a place in society, can be very overwhelming and even scary. I was one of those youths and can relate to what it's like.
I must say however, that although I've had my share of difficulties, I want to let them know that they are not alone. "Be True To Yourself"..."Be Strong"...IT GETS BETTER!!! Look at me...I'm going to be the next Emperor of New York! (I can't wait to dress you up David)

David
Who gave you the name Vanity Society?

Vanity
The name is self given. Omnia Vanitas ("All is Vanity")

David
Does the desire to constantly change your appearance come from a yearning for attention?

Vanity
No David, not at all. I have always been a very visual person.
I am an artist at heart and consider my body a blank canvas.
As a designer, I love creating new looks and exploring the many aspects of the decorative and wearable arts.

David
Were you self conscious about your physical appearance as a child?

Vanity
I almost said no, but truth be told, I suppose I was a bit. I was picked on and bullied a lot. I was rather thin and not very athletic. I never blended in, nor did I attempt to. I enjoyed my clothing and dressing up and never really cared about what the other children wore.

David
What is something you wish you could change about your appearance?

Vanity
I am honestly quite content with my appearance. When I want to be a different colour...I paint a rainbow on my face. When I want hair on my head...I choose one of my many wigs. When I want to be taller...I wear platform shoes or one of my high hats. If I want different coloured eyes...quick get the purple contacts!
The options are endless!

David
What is the biggest misconception people have about you?

Vanity
People sometimes look at me all painted and dressed up and think I'm unapproachable. Happily, after meeting and speaking with me, they realize how friendly and open I am.

David
What has been the most inspirational thing and who has been the most inspirational person in you life?

Vanity
I cannot pick just one thing that inspires me. I am always fascinated by the never ending beauty of nature and the universe.
The colours, patterns and textures always amaze and inspire me. Leaves, flowers, insects, animal skins, cloud formations, ripples in the water, shells, sand, planets...everywhere I look...AMAZING!

I have met and continue to meet so many great people and I am thankful for them all. There is however one man whom I shall always remember with fondness. Sadly he is no longer living, but holds a special place in my heart and memories. That man is... QUENTIN CRISP...He was a true gentleman. I adored our many chats together and admired his strength and independence. I made a purple Fedora for him that he modeled for me in one of my shows. I still have that hat and you can see me wearing it in some of my photos. On 21 November 1999, I was given news that Mr. Crisp died. With tears in my eyes, I immediately tried calling his home. Sadly, the phone just kept ringing.
He was an icon of homosexuality and refused to keep his sexuality private. He was a rather effeminate man from an early age and found himself the object of teasing. He wore make-up, dyed his long hair, and painted his fingernails.
His looks brought admiration and curiosity from some people, but generally attracted hostility and violence from strangers passing him in the streets.

The song "Englishman in New York" by Sting was written about Mr. Crisp.
It includes the following lines that I consider a very good mantra:

- It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile -
- Be yourself no matter what they say -

If you were on a deserted island what are 3 things you would want with you?

Vanity
1- A boat.
2- Someone to drive the boat.
3- Enough food to last throughout my journey back to civilization.

David
What are your last words for all the readers?

Vanity
Live every day to the fullest
and BE TRUE TO YOURSELF.

Charles Douglas, I am always in the middle, Vanity Society-nyc

David I am wiping tears from my eyes. Vanity you ignite the light from within your soul and it shines everywhere you go. To quote you “youth coming to terms with his or her sexuality, life can seem even harder. The desire for love and acceptance, dealing with peers and family, searching for a place in society, can be very overwhelming and even scary”. I just want to say thank you for being yourself. You have inspired me to continue on being “myself”. We live in a suppressed world where everybody wants to take and nobody wants to give. I have found that people in general seek acceptance more then they led you to believe. Accept yourself and others will accept you. BTW when people "tease" you, it's because they like you and are jelousssss they can't be you!!! This is for you QUENTIN CRISP RIP http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMXCPANHeYM
