Maureen Bharoocha is among Hollywood’s hottest young directors and her most recent project, “Fatal Flip,” is airing on Lifetime channel this weekend.  Her influences are Alfred Hitchcock, Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino and Francis Ford Coppola, so it is natural her imaginative and directorial style is of a dark, dramatic flare in this film.

It was inevitable that she would find her calling in the entertainment industry as she comes from a creative background.  In fact, the artistic gene runs in her family; her mother (an Irish Catholic woman) is a painter and her father (an Indian Burmese Muslim) is “an amazing chef.”

She started very young in recruiting her cousins for various plays and movies she made during her childhood.  Her passion continued through high school but it wasn’t until college where she took her first film class that she discovered this was the path for her.  Bharoocha continued her education at Boston University where she obtained a Master’s degree in Film Production with an emphasis on Directing.

After graduation, she was offered a coveted internship on CSI – at the time was the number one show on television.  The internship was instrumental in teaching her the ins and outs of a “well-oiled machine” and learned everything from writing to production.

During the writer’s strike in 2007, she found a job at the famous Sprinkles Cupcakes in Beverly Hills to pay the bills.  Bharoocha credits Sprinkles owners Charles and Candace Nelson at giving her the first real directing break.  After watching Bharoocha’s thesis film, "Abajee," Candace Nelson commissioned Bharoocha to do a series of short films based on the cupcakes.  Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa Simpson from the hit animated show “The Simpsons,” came on board to star in the first episode and was a huge hit.

Bharoocha’s experience includes creating content for Upright Citizens Brigade, a comedy troupe whose alumni include Amy Poehler, Fred Armisen, Rob Corddry, Abby Elliott and Keegan Michael Key, among many others.

When asked how she felt about being a female filmmaker in a male-dominated industry, Bharoocha responded, “I'm proud to be a female filmmaker making it happen.  On ‘Hairpin Bender,” I wanted to try to make the crew as much female as possible…you watch a film about women for women, you often see all the credits are men.  But I wanted to make sure I made a concerted effort to seek out talented females.”

More recently, Bharoocha teamed with her college friend, Ellen Huggins, to write a movie script called “Fatal Flip” in the vein of a 90s evil drama coupled with a DIY twist which was picked up by Lifetime Channel.  “Fatal Flip” has a very compelling storyline: “Jeff and Alex had a simple plan: buy a rundown house, make some repairs, sell it for a profit. But house-flipping can be expensive, and when the young couple partner with Nate, a handsome contractor with a dark past, they get more than they bargained for.”

“Fatal Flip,” starring Dominique Swain (Lolita), Mike Faiola (Awkward), Michael Steger (90210), Tatyana Ali (The Fresh Prince of Bel Air) will premiere on Lifetime on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 8 p.m. and will air again on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at 8 p.m.
