The passion exuding from Martin while she shared the development of the New York Vocal Workout Singing School, and her aspiration to open another school in Los Angeles, spring of 2015 was infectious.
Martin is no stranger to performance or life on the road. Her gift of singing was embraced at the young age of eight, and with a full scholarship she began studying at the Berklee College of Music by age sixteen. Prior to Berklee College she performed in full-scale musical productions and festivals in Hollywood, California. Martin’s vocal career took her on the road singing supporting vocals for artist such as: Barry White, Patti LaBelle, Stevie Wonder, Donna Summer, Norman Brown, Rafael Martos, D’Angelo, and many more.
An additional strength of Martin’s is one of teaching. At a very young age she remembers inviting neighborhood kids over to show them how to use the yellow pages. Helping others learn new skills and develop their existing talent is a blessing for Martin, a way she can nurture and give back. While on the road she would always help other artists with breathing and posture, vocal issues, and performance anxiety; so when she decided to put her suit-cases down permanently it was a natural next step to open the Vocal Workout Singing School.
Since 2001 Martin and her hand chosen team of instructors have helped many artists find their own unique sound in a safe and positive Zen-type atmosphere. The school offers everything a vocalist could need, from beginning classes to style and technique classes. Martin’s aspiration for each student is for them to learn the holistic nature of their gift, and be able to present it from the essence of their being, heart, and soul allowing the audience to be swept away by the emotion shared through the music. **image1***
The Vocal Workout Singing School teachers not only encourage and instruct upcoming artists, they have also assisted many professional artists as well. Entertainers who have sought after Martin’s advice have been: P. Diddy, Earthdriver, Sean Garrett, Jake Troth, Stereo Crowd, and Justine Skye. An additional rising artist who signed with Steve Wonder as Executive Producer was Dylan Jenet.
Martin is actively seeking vocal teachers to expand the New York based school, and for the up and coming Los Angeles school. Some criterion to apply are: a background in singing and performing; respect to the programs schedule; dedication to learning the schools method; five year loyalty to the company in which trainees are permitted to teaching Vocal Workout offices, and willingness to be open minded and to build self-confidence. On a personal note, Martin shared stories of the love, support, and influence her mother had on her life; Martin’s mother passed approximately one year ago. Since her mother died it has become very apparent that love, support, and mentoring are important blessings and resources in a person’s life. Martin, in honor of her mother’s love, would like to share the gifts of support, compassion, and mentoring to all her students; as if they were her own children. An inspirational quote of Martin’s is: “Dream Big! We dare you!”
