On a chillyevening in late October, things got mighty steamy in the Moroccan Lounge of the Fat Black Pussycat. One of Manhattans top event producers The Set NYC worked their magic as they hosted their first Steampunk event Haunted Hautery: A Neo-Victorian Fashion Steampunk Networking Event.
The evening was transformed into the sophistication and glamour of Steampunk which takes the elaborate, crafted style of the industrial era, and re-imagines it for the modern age into a Neo-Victorian Era. An Era which is according to some, is the greatest Era that never existed. The Set NYC showcased new and imaginative Steampunk fashions by designers Kristin Costa and Brit Frady-Williams - Berit New York. The evening’s festivities also bragged of the book release of ‘Anatomy of Steampunk: The Fashion of Victorian Futurism’ by author Katherine Gleason.
Guests came all decked out in their favorite Steampunk styles. They sipped on drinks and nibbles from the Fat Black Pussycat’s menu. They networked and schmoozed with each other, while leafing through the glossy pages of Katherine Gleason’s coffee table book ‘Anatomy of Steampunk’. ‘Anatomy of Steampunk’ illustrates with color photographs dazzling creations of numerous Steampunk fashion designers, it is alsoan inspirational sourcebook. In addition to presenting the looks and stories of these creative fashion artists, the book also details Steampunk projects for the reader to try at home.
Later in the evening the MC August Wahnsinger rocked the house as he introduced the Steampunk Fashion Show which incorporated gorgeous designs from the creative talents of Berit New York (NY Times, London Fashion Week) and Kristin Costa (Victoria's Secret Fashion Show wings, Ugly Betty, Fela on Broadway and Couture Fashion Week).
Pim Shih founder of The Set NYC started his career in events by taking comedy classes. Which lead to doing him doing comedy open mike gigs and then eventually creating his own events. Pim felt it was not an easy life being an artist that it was hard to make it make a living, to make friends and to find happiness. So he decided to start The Set NYC as a solution to some of the problems he found in the entertainment business. It started as an open mike variety show, with magicians, singers, dancers; different acts that were interesting and which would create a fun show. As things progressed one of his partners was into fashion and wanted to do a fashion show. So they started doing fashion shows and then just kept on creating events and slowly his business The Set NYC was established.
The premise of The Set NYC is to try to focus on the arts and artists first. For the focus to be less on making money and more on supporting the artists in all genres of fashion, music and the arts. Allowing artists to perform, show their work, connect, network and increase their exposure. The Set NYC gives artists a stage, supports their growth, increases exposure, marketing and connections through the arts, music, fashion, and events.
