The very chic Bruno Jamais Supper Club and KMR Communications recently hosted the launch party for the debut release of Lokah’s The Ivy Ceiling featuring the talents of SRI Michael and Uma Nanda Saraswati.

SRI Michael Shlofmitz and Uma Nanda Saraswati are the duo that comprises Lokah. The Ivy Ceiling offers a meditational transporting to India/Pakistani culture and merges the ancient Indian art of Kirtan with modern musical styles of the 21st century. Sanskrit Mantras and highly textured note blending unite as the sound moves through beat crescendos. The entire CD creates a sound that accompanies the pursuit of enlightenment of being.

The sound and beliefs vocalized by the artists’ have garnered industry buzz for their pursuits. The musical community’s support was evident in the contributions from legendary Hip Hop mogul Russell Simmons and the equally legendary, Police front man and solo artist, Sting as well as Roderick and Anisa Romero of the Seattle based underground band, Sky Cries Mary.

With the final concert of the Police reunion tour planned for the next evening Sting made a guest appearance at the event. Throughout the entire evening the crowd swelled to a fevered pitch and when Sting and Trudie Styler made their appearance the paparazzi went wild and yes, even I attempted to get a brief interview. Sting performs the hauntingly beautiful "Ma Durga" on track three.

The Ivy Ceiling also features Russell Simmons in a speaking introduction on track one. The words written by him reveal a growing pursuit for a spiritual enlightenment that is evidenced through personal involvements. As President and founder of Def Jam records, philanthropist, fashion designer of Russell Simmons Argyle Collection which is showing at the Style 360 alternative to fashion week in September, the Chairman of RUSH Charities, and Chairman of a little known organization, The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding Russell Simmons is a legend in his own time.

After the maddening crush of paparazzi that surrounded him as he made his way through the supper club I was able to speak with him regarding his devotion to enlightenment and two of his lesser known charities.

Janet Walker: As chairman for The Foundation for Ethnic Understanding what are the goals of that organization?

Russell Simmons: I think the greatest thing we’re doing right now is planting a seed of Muslin/Jewish dialogue. Also the way the dialogue is created. When Muslims are defending Jews they are fighting anti-Semitism and when Jews are fighting Islamaphobia that kind of practice is the most obvious one that people see. It is a good seed.

I moved to another topic, his involvement with the Gedenk Movement launched by Hip Hop violinist and Grammy award winner Miri Ben Ari.

Janet Walker: Miri stated in an interview that she plans to use the African American struggle, the Black Slavery struggle to educate the over 50% of holocaust illiterates in America. Being involved in that organization what do you think about that focus?

Russell Simmons: I think any suffering of any kind, of ethnic cleansing or any of those types of struggles, any of those examples teaches us about all of them.

With that our brief interview was over and still even with only two questions I found that his devotion was more than seizing an opportunity for good PR but a commitment to community, to self and to others.

The ultra posh Bruno Jamais Supper club is nestled in a luxurious Mansion opposite the grand façade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. As always, the charming Bruno was a perfect host allowing his restaurant to be utilized for the launch party. The hors’d'oeuvres flowed as freely as the wine and ranged from a summer selection of creamed spinach canapés in thin delicate spring roll wraps to Middle Eastern couscous in decorative oversized spoons and as requested by Sting a delicious assortment of vegetarian fare.

With two wine cellars to cater to even the most exclusive needs the magnificent wine selection at Bruno’s ranges from moderate priced, $40.00 per bottle to the amazing $9,000.00 per bottle. With his club being used for numerous events I have sampled both wine and various hor’dourves. The white wine, always my favorite, is smooth and light with a subtle fragrance and at first sip, charming and inviting.

Bruno’s offers magnificent culinary creations fusing Asian and French cuisine to create an entrée menu featuring Scallops 4 Ways, A Duo of Lamb, and Porterhouse for Two with bordelaise sauce and potato gratin. Appetizers of Beluga Caviar at the high end and more moderately, and Chef John Keller’s specialty, Lobster Brulee, thinking of crème brulee this dish is succulent lobster with a sweet sauce with mushroom duxelle. The restaurant caters to an exclusive clientele and creates a comfortable atmosphere with a feel of privacy welcomed by all.
