20th Anniversary Fleet Week New York City

Imagine being on the deck of an amphibious assault vessel, destroyer or cruiser as you pass under the Verrazano Narrows Bridge; around you, the rails are manned by Sailors and Marines who have sworn to protect this country.  Thousands of Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard will participate in the 20th anniversary of Fleet Week New York, which will take place May 23 through May 30.

USS Wasp

Hosted nearly every year since 1984, Fleet Week New York is the City's celebration of the sea services. This event also provides an opportunity for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding Tri-State area to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as witness first-hand the latest capabilities of today's maritime services.

USS Hue City

HMS Winston Churchill

Fleet Week will include dozens of military demonstrations and displays through the week as well as public visitations of participating ships from May 24 through May 29. While in New York City, Sailors and Marines will participate in Memorial Day parades in all five boroughs, volunteer with local community outreach organizations, and experience the sights, sounds and hospitality of New York City.

USS Oscar Austin

AH-1W Cobra

One of the highlights, of the many events planned for Fleet Week, is the US Marine Corp's RAID of New York City! Marines with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 365 (HMM-365) will be conducting helicopter raid demonstrations May 24-26 as part of Fleet Week 2007. The demonstration will consist of two AH-1W Cobra helicopters performing an area sweep of the landing zone, followed by six-Marine teams performing a fast-roping insertion and extraction demonstration from three CH-46E Sea Knight helicopters.

USS Stephen W. Grove

For all you tech geeks out there, some great Navy science and technology will be on display onboard the USS Wasp.  Some of the exciting tech you can see up close:

Infantry Immersive Training uses virtual reality and real-world stage sets to immerse Marines and soldiers in lifelike simulations of hostile environments, burning buildings, and other life-or-death situations.
Electromagnetic Rail Gun fires projectiles at up to Mach 8 without the use of explosives or propellants. Models of the proposed prototype guns and projectiles will be on display, based on the working demonstrator at Dahlgren, Virginia.
RATTLRS mockup of a supersonic cruise missile technology demonstration project, currently in development.
Joint Light Tactical Vehicle  designed for today's battleground, with better passenger protection, this vehicle will provide increased force protection, survivability, and improved capacity over the current up-armored High Mobility Multi-Wheeled Vehicle, while balancing mobility and transportability requirements with total ownership costs.  Model will be on display.

F-14 Tomcat

If you are an aircraft enthusiast like me you will as get the chance to see some of our nations greats fighter jet fly over head like the F-14 Tomcat and the F/A-18 Hornet.

FA-18 Hornet

With our heroic troops still supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, the Iraq War, and with Memorial Day coming, I don't see a better way to show our brave Navy men and women that we care, and appreciate the sacrifices they are making, then by welcoming them with open arms and showing them what a great American city like New York has to offer them.  It is the least we can do in return for what they are doing for us!
