Canada circa early 1970’s, a young actor/playwright named Miles (Alex Fast) intent on researching farm life for an upcoming stage production, knocks on the door of a farmhouse. The door is answered by Angus (William Laney) a simple mined aging man, sharing the farm with his life long friend Morgan, (Brad Fryman). The transpiring events skillfully directed by Alexander Dinelaris lead Miles into experiencing first hand the life of a farmer and deeply into the lives and secrets of Angus and Morgan.
Nothing in this world, created by award winning playwright Michael Healy is as it appears. On the surface it is a modest farm designed by the creative team Rebecca Lord-Surratt (Scenic Design), David Murin (Costume Design), Amith Chandrashaker (Lighting Design), and Nick Moore (Sound Design/Composer). However, as time goes on and you are drawn into the world inhabited by these men; secrets and lies are exposed which threaten to shatter the lives of all involved.
Themes of deception, simplicity and love are seamlessly run together in this story. At first glance, it is apparent you are in store for an evening of drama, until you find yourself laughing at the absurdity of tasks assigned by the stoic and seemingly cold Morgan (Fryman) to the over eager naïve Miles (Fast), so many laughs, that it is easy to question if you have left the world of drama and entered a comedy. Until again, you are dragged back to the drama, questioning reality, as Angus (Laney) who at first seems to only be a simple minded man child, turns out to be a math savant struggling to keep his grip on a reality that is not what it seems.
While it would be very easy for any actor to ride on the waves of the dialog of this beautifully written piece and deliver a satisfactory performance. The director lead the actors on stage at the SoHo Playhouse into an expertly balanced performance of a calm understated subtlety, an earthy danger and a delightful humor.
