"It Shoulda Been You" Review - You'll laugh till you cry...

The Bride is Jewish.  The groom is not.  And let's just say, the bridal party is, well, quite diverse.  Put that together with Tyne Daly, the mother of all mothers and you have 100 minutes of non-stop, side-splitting, laughter.  The kind of laughter that everyone should have at least once a day to stay healthy.  (That's what the doctors tell us.)

Word of mouth on the street was 'you gotta see this show.'  So, I took myself down to the Brooks Atkinson Theater and spent an afternoon where I not only related to everyone in the cast, but I coulda been in the cast without a script.  It Shoulda Been You, starring Tyne Daly, (Judy Steinberg) who says what she means all the time, no matter the consequences. Let us not forget she was the unforgettable Mama Rose in Gypsy.  Harriet Harris (Georgette Howard), is the mother of the groom, who would rather have a gay son than have him marry a Jewish girl.  Oy vey.

Lisa Howard (Jenny Steinberg) the 'you have a pretty face and if you were just thinner....' daughter, who plans her sisters' wedding flawlessly, She can belt out a song like no ones' business and for those of us who have never been, or will ever be, a size zero, we cheer for her plight to become the 'favorite daughter,' or, at least, the most normal one in the group.  Without giving the hysterical twist away, let's just say, she just might be more 'normal' than we think.  Sierra Boggess, (Rebecca Steinberg), is the 'favorite daughter' and 'bride to be' even though hidden secrets abound.

The all around cast does a wonderful job at blending in to, what shoulda been, the wedding of the year.  Oh, I forgot one tiny little detail.  Does the Jewish ex-boyfriend show up minutes before the 'I Do's'?  Yes he does.  But his agenda is not what you think.

The lines for the show were around the block and halfway down the other side.  Since I am a New Yorker I can safely say that almost everyone on line (or as they say 'in line' in other cities around the country), was my neighbor in tri-state area.  Not that living in Albuquerque or Montana is gonna stop you from laughing, but if you're from here, you will 'get' it.  All of it.

By the way, there is no intermission.  So make sure you visit the appropriate rest room before the show, or you may regret it later on.

Prior to seeing this show, I found out that it is planning on closing August 9th.  No one understands why.  Some say it could be the landlord raising the rent, or another show that needs the space.  Maybe it is because it was passed by on Tony awards.  Therefore I must express my personal passion of persuasion.  I remember clearly some of the shows I've seen that were the 'big winners' and after the show ended, I found it a bit difficult to give a positive rating.  Don't let that dissuade you.  Take a friend and go see this show.  If you have no friends, no worry, you'll find one 'on line.'

Featuring a book and lyrics by Brian Hargrove, with music by Barbara Anselmi, the show is directed by David Hyde Pierce.

The show is currently playing at the Brooks Atkinson Theater, 256 West 47th Street, NYC.  Do yourself a favor, go to see this hysterical version of 'real life' before August 9th.  Trust me on this one.  Itshouldabeenyou website
