I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change is a timeless tribute to relationships; their magic and beauty and their challenges. From that first date to the, ‘golden years,’ this popular Off Broadway show uses songs and skits to examine romance and relationships over the course of a lifetime. It looks at love from many vantage points--male and female, young and old, happily ever after and not so much--and offers an authentic view into our common human experience. Somehow this show is able to distill the complicated nature of love and intimate connection into nineteen compact and powerful vignettes, with each scene delivering realistic and relatable messages. This fast-paced show has an ensemble of four incredibly talented performers who are able to take the audience along with them through courtship, marriage, parenthood and the twilight years.

Written by Joe DiPietro, with buoyant songs composed by Jimmy Roberts, this show premiered in 1995 and ran for more than 5,000 performances through 2008. It became the second longest running Off Broadway musical and has been translated into numerous languages.

The success of the show is even more remarkable, perhaps, as there are no lavish sets, no extraordinary special effects and it relies on the strength of its content in delivering its universal message.

Actors Helen Buttery, Diane Tyminski, Jim Tyminski and Michael DeGrotta play multiple roles throughout the show and are all superb. Relying on their talent and a few minimal costume changes, they are fully believable at all stages of life and love.  Equally adept at delivering hilarious lines or shining a light on tender and poignant moments in their romantic stories, each performer strikes precisely the right note from beginning to end.

Adding to the success of the performance, students from the Playhouse’s Children’s Theatre, helped with the sets throughout the show and delighted the audience with their presence on stage.  Those young actors already convey prodigious talent and will no doubt be center stage before long.

There are a host of good reasons, “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change,” remains a timeless and beloved musical. I suspect, however, that the best explanation can be found soon after the show premiered in 1995. During that early performance, a woman in the audience blurted out, “this is my life!” And the rest, as they say, is wonderful, musical theatre history.

Don’t miss out on this classic show at the fabulous Delray Beach Playhouse. This wonderful community theatre offers Broadway plays, a Musical Memories series, a Children’s Theatre and a host of delightful classes, lectures and series.
