Rock in Rio originated in 1985 and attracted nearly 1.4 million people. Originally in other countries such as: Brazil, Lisbon, Madrid, throughout the years Rock in Rio has transmitted to 55 countries, 580 million viewers and streamed live. Now in its 30th year Rock in Rio is now touching US soil and planting its roots in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"Other cities have been interested in hosting Rock in Rio, but the Entertainment Capital of the World seemed like the perfect fit to introduce the festival to U.S. audiences that haven’t experienced its magic, states Rock in Rio Senior Vice President Roberta Medina. Rock in Rio delivers not only some of music’s biggest names, but also an exciting and diverse experience that includes attractions for the whole family.  It’s a fantastic fit for a high-energy city like Las Vegas, where people are always ready to enjoy new types of entertainment.  In addition, the location on the Strip makes Rock in Rio USA easily accessible for tourists staying at any of Las Vegas’ great hotels as well as locals attending the festival."

Rock in Rio partnered with MGM/ Yucaipa/Cirque du Soleil in order to build a brand new permanent 37-acre open-air venue called ‘The City of Rock.’ Once complete, The City of Rock, will then be used as a concert venue for other consumers  for years to come. Collectively Rock in Rio, MGM/Yucaipa/Cirque du Soleil will spend $20 million on its development. The City of Rock will be located on Sahara Avenue near the MGM-owned Circus Circus Las Vegas hotel and casino.

"We want for Rock in Rio to be a global brand of music, and for that you have to come to the US", says Medina. Since the first edition we were never dedicated to a certain style of music, says Medina. At Rock in Rio you will find pop, rock, Brazilian music, and more. We understand and want there to be something for everyone. "
