Let's be Frank. No, none of us is Frank – Frank Marino that is. And if one of us was Frank, that person would be the Queen of the Strip. And the heat is rising on this queen. Frank Marino, star of Divas, is about to be roasted.
The fires are sure to be hot at the Show Biz Roast when Frank is the roastee on Friday evening, October 4 at the Stratosphere. This the the third in a series of Show Biz Roasts. The first victim, um, make that roastee, was the sun tanned bleach blond hot and sexy and talented Zowie Bowie, aka Chris Phillips. Next was the famous, some say infamous, former Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman
The second roast and it's pre party were bigger and grander than the first and Producer Andy Walmsley has promised that, “this next one is by far the most ambitious as not only am I doing a huge red carpet but I am also producing a pre roast show called ' The show before the show ' .. there will be a small stage in the lobby and we have six acts performing during the party.”
There will also be an after party at the top of the Stratosphere Tower in the 107 Lounge following the roast. But, before you get too excited, here's the bad news. This event is invitation-only for show biz folks and related industries.
Robin Leach will add his barbs to the roast
According to Walmsley, The Stratosphere has added 150 extra seats to bring the room's capacity up to an all time record, but Walmsley added, “the demand is insane.” He promises that, “This roast is by far going to be the craziest and most outrageous.”
Melodie Sweets might not be so sweet this time
Those attending will have the opportunity to contribute to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They'll also have a chance to go home with at $1,000 gift basket to be awarded to the most flamboyently dressed audience member. To be clear, Andy is asking that the women dress like men and vice versa. After all, that's what Frank Marino's long running show at the Quad is all about.
This is a labor of love for the English born Emmy award-winning set designer. This time, Walmsley said, “I can barely believe myself some of the stuff we are going to be doing.” He is changing the formula a bit and promises the event will be 50% roast and 50% variety show, but adds, “with some of the craziest wacky stuff you have ever seen on a Vegas stage.”
The no-holes-barred event at the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower will begin with a red carpet and pre-show party at 9:00 p.m. If past roasts are any indication, spectators can look forward to the chance to see many of their Vegas favorites. The late start time is designed to accommodate the many performers appearing in local shows.
Walmsley set about creating the roasts, “to bring the show business community of Las Vegas together in a social setting to experience the camaraderie rarely enjoyed since the golden era of the Rat Pack.” Roasters will be celebrating, teasing, and poking fun at both the roastee and fellow roasters.
There will be musical roasts backed by Lon Bronson and his live ten piece band, surprise guests, and an on-stage bar fueling the fun, all with tongue in cheek affection for fellow Showbiz pal Frank Marino.
So, the question is, is the roastee looking forward to the heat? I checked in with Frank with a few quick questions.
Frank Marino, star of Divas playing at the Quad
DD: Frank, why did you agree to be roasted?
FM: I agreed to get roasted because I wanted to see who wouldn't be afraid to take a pot shot at me.
DD: Are there any roasters that you are afraid of?
FM: Nope. I hope whatever they can dish out, they'll be able to take back. I have nothing to hide so anything they say is fair game.
DD: I understand that people attending will have the opportunity to contiribute to the Make A Wish Foundation.
FM: That's the charity that I donate to every month and give most of my product sales profits to.
DD: Your partner of 20 years, Alex Schechter, recently proposed to you on your stage at the Quad Resort & Casino during your show. Do you have a wedding date and are any plans in place?
FM: My wedding plans are going great. I'm waiting til I finish building my new home and we're going to have it there.
DD: What do you want people to know about this roast?
FM: I would like everybody to know the night is going to be very exciting, probably the biggest roast they had so far.
Celebrity roasters include Robin Leach, Mark Shunock, Louie Anderson, Shayma Tash, Frankie Scinta, Murray Sawchuck, and Pia Zadora.
