The global smash hit musical MAMMA MIA! is returning to Las Vegas on May 8 to The New Tropicana. MAMMA MIA'S worldwide producer Judy Craymer as well as Alex Yemenidjian, Tropicana Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Fred Harmon spoke at a February 5 press conference to review the plans.
CEO Yemenidjian discussed the recently completed $200 million upgrade and transformation that provides a casual elegant resort experience. The casino as well as all the rooms and convention space have all been modernized and upgraded. A bright South Beach theme is evident throughout the casino.
Harmon said that the show is, “an uplifting experience and is about escape and getting a second chance”. The Greek Island location for the musical fits nicely in a hotel like the New Tropicana with its magnificent pool. He said that the showroom is being upgraded and enlarged to 1197 seats prior to the May 8th premiere.
The show's producer Judy Craymer said that this production of MAMMA MIA! will have a full Broadway cast. She added that the movie version starring Meryl Streep has enhanced the popularity of the show.
Acclaimed by the Associated Press as “quite simply, a phenomenon,” MAMMA MIA! continues its success around the world having been seen by more than 54 million people in 38 productions in 14 languages in over 400 cities. Now celebrating 13 smash-hit years on Broadway and over 5,000 performances, it is one of only five musicals to have run for more than 10 years on Broadway.
The original West End production, now in its 15th year, has celebrated over 6,000 performances in London. MAMMA MIA! is one of the most successful musicals of all time and the movie adaptation starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan is one of the most successful movie musicals, grossing $600 million worldwide.
Inspired by the storytelling magic of ABBA’s timeless songs, MAMMA MIA! is Judy Craymer’s vision of staging writer Catherine Johnson’s sunny, funny tale of family and friendship unfolding on a tiny Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter’s quest to discover the identity of her father brings three men from her mother’s past back to the island they had last visited 20 years ago. Songs including “Dancing Queen,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Money, Money, Money” and “Take a Chance on Me” are all featured in this feel-good night of fun and laughter.
Tickets for the show, priced at $49 to $135, can now be purchased through the Tropicana box office. Special hotel stay theater packages are available. The show will run at 7:30 PM Sunday to Thursday and at 5:30 and 9:00 PM on Saturday. It is dark on Friday.
