50 Shades! The Parody

When I first thought about attending the 1 year anniversary performance of "50 Shades! The Parody", I was reminded of a joke. "If Christian Grey had not been a hot billionaire and instead lived in a trailer park in North Carolina, 50 Shades would be an episode of Criminal Minds." And this premise seems to be the source for "50 Shades! The Parody".  Creative casting, funny and innovative music and a truly talented cast make "50 Shades! The Parody" a tremendous evening of entertainment.

Maren Wade as Anastasia

Led by a wonderful performance by Maren Wade as the virginal, naïve Anastasia Steele, the parody starts strong and coasts through the many musical numbers and skits. The show opens at a meeting of a woman's book club where three frustrated housewives ponder the next book that the group should read. One by one they jump on the 50 Shades bandwagon and their inner fantasies begin to be revealed.

As the women make their way through the book, the chapters and characters comes to life as we see the timid, down trodden, doormat, Anastasia, meet the elusive and mysterious Christian Gray. Christian Grey is played by Paul Mattingly with a bravado that is wonderful. Paul is a large man and not exactly as the character as described in the book, a perfect parody choice. Light on his feet, Mattingly cruises the stage like a battleship in a speedboat race. His voice is amazingly versatile and he has the showstopper song. (The title of which I cannot print here)

The three book-club women, Adriana Lomysh, Christine Hudman and Sabrina Sia, all have wonderful voices and terrific comedic ability. Philip Drennan provides many laughs as the love-stricken Jose and the ensemble adds that perfect touch of abs and cleavage so desperately needed in a parody such as this.
