Townhouse Review - 100th Year Anniversary December 3rd through 7th

Townhouse is a historical gem nestled in Venice, California.

Originally built in 1915 and established as a grocery store by an Italian immigrant named Cesar Menotti. Later beneath the store, during the prohibition era 1920s, a speakeasy with secrete lift, hidden staircase, and underground tunnel was established.

The new owners, Louie and Netty Ryan, will be celebrating Townhouse's 100th anniversary beginning on December 3rd and continuing through December 7th. The celebration will also honor Repeal Day on December 5th.  Repeal Day was accomplished with the 21st Amendment: The repeal of Prohibition within the United States that occurred on December 5, 1933.

Louie when asked about prohibition and their 100th anniversary celebration stated: "I am happy that prohibition ended when it did, on Dec 5, 1933. The reason we celebrate our anniversary on that day is because no one is certain of the date The Townhouse opened, but we do know that the upstairs saloon reopened on this date and I'm sure it was one hell of a celebration!"

The room downstairs from the original grocery store has been declared The Del Monte Speakeasy and continues to serve old-fashioned cocktails with freshly squeezed juices and hand chopped ice.

During the celebration on Repeal Day, December 5th, the owners will ring a bell indicating that for one hour all drinks will be Prohibition era prices. When asked about the hidden passages leading to the Townhouse, and if there have been tours Louie responded that: "The actual tunnels were filled in by the city 30/40 years ago, but the entrance to the tunnel remains and that is frequently viewed by tourists and patrons alike."

Louie encourages all to come and celebrate, he stated that during the five day celebration: "We want to give the patrons of the Townhouse the richest entertainment available, and blow the roof off the place; especially on The 5th. "  Currently the festivities will include musical entertainment from J. Rocc, and Calvin Love; along with DJ sets by Bixel Boys, Cut Chemist, Egon, and Nobody.  On Repeal day doors open at noon and catering will be by Hatchet Hall. Additionally, Menotti's Coffee Shop - also owned by the Ryan's, next door to Townhouse will reopen on Repeal Day at 6:00 PM, via a connecting door, and serve alcohol based coffee beverages: Gran Marnier Mocha, Iced Spanish Rum Latte, and Irish Coffee.

Historically the establishment had a few well known patrons enter the doors such as Charlie Chaplin and Jim Morrison. Currently the purposefully dim-mystic environment also presents live renown acts such as Feist, Ben Harper, Bilal, Talib Kweli, and Miguel.  Additional performances have been: Wavvves, Kurt Vile, Cherry Glazerr, Hanni El Khatib, Allah-Las, Nick Waterhouse, King Tuff, and Gaslamp Killer. During the week the venue features a comedy and burlesque show as well as DJs who spin multiple genre music. Furthermore, it is no secret that Phantom Vixens filmed their music video "Green Eyed Love" in the basement, and LMFAO filmed their music video "Sexy and I know it" upstairs.

Come out the week of December 3rd through the 7th to experience the wonderful history and hidden secrets of the Townhouse, Del Monte Speakeasy, and Menotti's Coffee Shop.  Townhouse is located at 52 Windward Avenue Venice, California, 90291.
