California Citrus- A Fight for Survival

Facing a serious citrus problem, California calls upon its residents to help save its history and landscape by battling against Asian citrus psyllid carrying with it Huanglongbing (HLB), a tree killing disease.

Being the nation’s leading fresh citrus producing state with a $2 billion dollar industry as well as the state with the most citrus trees in our backyards, this can make or break our golden state. There is no cure for this spreading tree killing disease, only the help of Californian inhabitants can stop this horrific disease from further scattering and harming our state’s citrus.

The Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program, as well as the California Department of Food and Agriculture, and the United States Department of Agriculture are urging people to give thorough inspections of their citrus trees to avoid the spread of Asian psyllid and HLB.

Severely threatening backyard and profitable citrus trees it is advised to immediately report the sighting of these diseases to the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program’s hotline. There are also public service announcements providing information on the signs of HLB and Asian psyllid and what to do if found. There are also a number of useful tips and steps to take listed on the Citrus Pest & Disease Prevention Program’s website that can help many Californian residents to identify the insect carrying the disease that has been found throughout Southern California.
