Randal Haworth Iconographer Art Opening Beverly Hills

"Dependency," 2006, Acrylic on canvas, 24 x 36 inches

Some of my favorite art galleries in Los Angeles include New Image Art gallery and MK Gallery. My favorite artists are Richard Coleman, OS Gemeos and Camille Rose Garcia.  I decided to check out a gallery that I had never been to before called Karen Lynn Gallery in Beverly Hills to see the Randal Haworth Iconographer opening.  I found it very interesting when I learned that Randal Haworth is actually not only an artist but also a highly regarded plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills.  Is Haworth an artist? or his he a plastic surgeon?  I guess he's both, as he's been painting since childhood and I suppose being a plastic surgeon in itself can be considered "artistic".

"Furtive Lives," 20006, Acrylic on canvas, 18 x 24 inches

I was disappointed to find cliched work such as a painting called 'Dependency', acrylic on canvas of Paris Hilton wearing a tiara that spells out 'Slut'.  It's possible that I missed the point of 'irony' in the painting however I don't find Paris bashing funny or cool, why join the bandwagon and use her as the butt of his joke? Apparently in this work Haworth is 'questioning disposable income and the vices of celebrity', rich coming from a noted plastic surgeon.  In 'Dependency' Haworth references an early Dutch rendition of Descent from the Cross, Paris Hilton replaces the Christ figure in a play on the virgin-whore paradigm.  I tend to judge artwork based on what is aesthetically pleasing to my eyes, and unfortunately most of the work in this show, in my opinion was not.  Although I do think that Randal Haworth is a very talented painter, items like a red bull can thrown into a painting were not reminiscent of Andy Warhol but rather of what I had to drink that day.

"My Generation," Acrylic on Canvas, 2006, 12 x 16

Randal Digby Haworth is a highly regarded plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, upon learning this, his art began to make more sense to me.  Randal Haworth is known worldwide an innovator in the field of plastic surgery, specializing in both reconstructive and aesthetic operations. He is recognized as one of the top surgeons in Beverly Hills, receiving the Top Doctor Award in 2003. Dr. Haworth donates his time and skills to the reconstructive projects in Africa and Asia. Art has been a childhood passion for Dr. Haworth. He went into the field of aesthetic and reconstructive surgery to apply his artistic gifts to medical ends.
