2013 Human Rights Campaign L.A. Gala

Put on your ties and evening gowns ladies and gents! The Human Rights Campaign (HRC), America's largest civil rights organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered equality, holds their annual HRC L.A. Gala Dinner at the Ritz-Carlton/ J.W. Marriot at LA LIVE Hotel. "Founded in 1980, HRC advocates on behalf of LGBT Americans, mobilizes grassroots actions in diverse communities, invests strategically to elect fair-minded individuals to office and educates the public about LGBT issues" (www.hrc.org).

On their last event before the four California plaintiffs (Jeff Zarrillo & Paul Katami along with Kris Perry & Sandy Stier) head to the U.S. Supreme Court to challenge Prop. 8(a California ballot proposition and a state constitutional amendment passed in the November 2008 state elections restricting the recognition of marriage to only couples of the opposite sex) and DOMA (the federal Defense of Marriage Act which denies federal benefits to married same-sex couples), supporters and allies gather together for good food and good company while raising money for a good cause.

Though Prop. 8 and DOMA were the main topics of the program; Disney/ABC Television group (presented to Anne Sweeney) was awarded the 2013 HRC Corporate Equality Award for consistently scoring 100% over the last seven years on HRC's Corporate Equality Index.

Speakers for the event included: HRC President Chad Griffin, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, Governor Christine Gregoire (22nd Governor of Washington), Congressman Mark Takano, Anne Sweeney (co-chair, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group), Rob Reiner (Director, Producer), Kerry Washington ("Scandal", Django Unchained), Tom Bergeron (Host of "Dancing with the Stars"), Kris Perry & Sandy Stier (Prop 8 Plaintiffs), and Paul Katami & Jeff Zarrillo (Prop 8 Plaintiffs).
