Kiss Kiss Cabaret Holiday Spectacular Review - Naughty and Nice All in One

The Underground Vaudettes, Run Run Rudolph

This holiday season, Kiss Kiss Cabaret presents their annual Holiday Spectacular, which adds a special seasonal twist to its rotating menu of variety acts. Featuring reindeer, elves, glittery snowflakes, and more, this selection of holiday performances is sure to put you in right mood for the holidays (and perhaps a few other things, as well).

EV Velour, Sweater Weather

Of the acts I saw, I have a special fondness for a rendition of two excellent songs from Christmas Claymation classic The Year without a Santa Claus, Snow Miser and Heat Miser. The performer slowly transforms from one character to the other as she removes her Snow Miser-inspired costume piece by piece to reveal a Heat Miser-inspired look underneath. An adult take on beloved children's song "Let It Go" from Disney's popular film Frozen will have parents in the audience viewing the ubiquitous tune in a whole new light. And another performer embraces the adventurous life of a gingerbread person with a delightfully unexpected routine that involves dancing down the aisles.

Of course, the acts change from week to week, so your performance might include entirely different performers and acts. Still, with Kiss Kiss Cabaret's consistent quality, it's difficult to imagine their putting together a lineup that disappoints.

Miss Magnolia Rouge, Skin

In addition to the assortment of fabulous Chicago burlesque performers, Kiss Kiss Cabaret's Holiday Spectacular offers magicians, music, and comedy acts in rotation, so like Forrest Gump's proverbial box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get next. To bookend each performance, The Underground Vaudettes bring their own special touch to the Hawaiian-inspired Christmas carol Mele Kalikimaka and embrace the prancing fun of Santa's reindeer with Run, Run Rudolph.

In the midst of the stress of the holiday season, cheering and hollering in support of talented burlesque performers provides a sense of exuberant catharsis. Burlesque offers an opportunity for performers to express themselves in whatever way they wish, melting the quirky, funny, sultry, and sexy into one cohesive unit. To revel in this tantalizing display of honest and joyful performance is to exist in a space full of fun and absent of responsiblities. Although lighthearted and at times silly, the Holiday Spectacular offers welcome relief from seasonal stress.

Naughty Natanya, Do I Move You?

In addition to the Holiday Spectacular, Kiss Kiss Cabaret is also hosting two end-of-the-year parties – The Eve of the Even Party: Underground Casino on December 30, and the 6th Annual New Year's Eve Hullabaloo on December 31. Information about these events can be found here
