Heartbeat of Home Review - Go See It

I loved the original Riverdance because the magnificent performers made Irish dancing, with all its intricate movements, look so simple. But, when I saw Heartbeat of Home this week, I was definitely in “swept away” mode – mesmerized by the extravagant sights and sounds emanating from 37 dancers,  a ten-piece band and the mesh of traditional Irish, Latin and Afro-Cuban music.

This is the American premiere right here in Chicago, at the Oriental Theatre (24 West Randolph) through March 16.  Just as Moya Doherty produced and John McColgan directed the original Riverdance to consistently excellent reviews, they joined forces again for this new high- octane and very sexy music and dance extravaganza.

Heartbeat of Home features a brand new, electrifying sound written by Golden-Globe nominated composer Brian Byrne.  It has already been recorded as a DVD and as a CD, and includes the popular hit song Lead Me Home, sung beautifully in the show by Lucia Evans.

The dancing cast is international – from Ireland, America, Australia, Britain, Canada, Italy, Mexico and Spain.  David Bolger is the brilliant choreographer who has the audience dancing in its seats.

In Ireland the show has been critically praised for being ‘an extraordinary show…Jaw dropping…inspiringly imaginative” by the Irish Mail.  Pat Kenny of Newstalk called it “stunning!  Amazing! Absolutely glorious! Young people at the peak of fitness doing extraordinary, athletic things doing it in a very sinuous way.”

The concept development and lyrics are by award-winning Irish writer, Joseph O’Connor. Joseph comments: 'when we marry the sexiness of salsa to the thunder of Irish dance, the lyricism of tango to the yearning of Sean-nos, what a night of storytelling we shall have'.

The Heartbeat of Home creative team also includes John Carey (Irish Dance Choreography), Alan Farquharson (Set Design), David Torpey/Image Now (Projection Design), Peter Canning (Lighting Design), Ciaran Byrne (Sound Design), Monica Ennis and Niamh O’Connor (Costumes Styling) and Padraic Moyles (Assistant Director).

I was struck by the high-definition, cutting-edge projection technology and the engaging narrative structure as I found myself in a dream-world of joyous, heart-stopping, high-energy music and dance.

Three words of advice for theatregoers looking for a treat this week…Go See It!  You’ll be extremely happy you did.
