Broadway in Chicago Presents Disney’s Smash Hit Musical Newsies Review — Paper Boys on Strike

Extra, extra, read all about it! Disney’s Broadway smash hit musical Newsies opened at the Cadillac Palace Theater Friday, July 29, 2016 and will be playing for a limited engagement through Sunday, August 7.

Newsies on Strike

Newsies follows the life of charismatic newspaper boy Jack Kelly (Joey Barreiro) as he leads a band of other ragged newspaper boys who dream of a better life far from the streets of New York.

Jack, along with his right-hand men Davey (Stephen Michael Langton), Les (Turner Birthisel and Ethan Steiner alternating role), and Crutchie (Andy Richardson) become outraged when Joseph Pulitzer (Steve Blanchard) and William Randolph Hearst raise the distribution price of “papes” at the newsies expense.

The newsies become outraged and decide to go on strike in hopes of taking down the newspapers of New York and earning some respect. Those dreams seem a little far-fetched until Jack meets Katherine (Morgan Keene) and the boys soon become front-page news.

Katherine and Newsies

I was first introduced to Newsies when attending a friend’s high school’s show choir competition and immediately fell in love with the music. I started watching YouTube videos of the show and was so excited when I heard Newsies was coming to Chicago. Nothing beats seeing this show on stage and experiencing the extremely talented cast singing, dancing and tumbling right in front of your eyes.

Little did I know that Newsies is inspired by the real-life “Newsboy Strike of 1899.” Kid Blink, who was blind in one eye and one of the most famous children in history, led a band of orphaned and runaway newspaper boys on a two-week long action against the powerful newspaper publishers of New York. During that time, newspaper were the only source of news, so taking down the newspapers meant taking down a huge part of New York. It’s truly amazing how a piece of history can come to life on stage.

The cast is truly amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen so much continuous energy throughout a production like that of this Newsies cast. What also always seems to amaze me is stage sets and this may have been my favorite set because of the simplicity of it yet the multiple ways it was used. Made to look like fire escapes, the cast would run up and down the set, dancing or chasing, whether it was stationery or moving. It’s definitely something you don’t want to miss.

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, Newsies is directed by Tony nominee Jeff Calhoun and features a Tony Award-winning score with music by eight-time Academy Award winner Alan Menken and lyrics by Jack Feldman. Featured songs include “Seize The Day,” “Santa Fe,” King of New York” and “Carrying the Banner.” The production features a book by four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein and is choreographed by Christopher Gattelli, who won a 2012 Tony Award for his work.
