If you’re in search of for holiday fun for the whole family, look no further than A Christmas Story, The Musical! at the Chicago Theatre! The 1983 holiday classic is a Christmas tradition of many, and is even more exciting set to catchy tunes and fantastic dance numbers. You won’t want to miss this Christmas spectacular!
“After sold out record breaking runs at Kansas City Rep in 2009 and Seattles 5th Avenue Theatre in 2010, Chicago has played a major part in establishing the first national tour of A Christmas Story, The Musical! with auditions and then rehearsals held here…”
A Christmas Story is the tale of a young boy, Ralphie, living in rural Indiana in 1940 and his seemingly never ending journey to receive the Red Ryder BB Gun for Christmas. The show beings with Ralphie about 40 years older, recalling his best Christmas. The set then jumped to Ralphie’s home in 1940 and the older Ralphie narrated throughout. Young Ralphie carried the song with most instrumentation by a piano and a drum set. I like the fact that the music was simple, but still had a large enough impact on the scene.
With many roadblocks and amusing twist and turns, Ralphie ends up getting the gun and claims that it was the best Christmas present ever.
This show is fun, high energy and exciting, and most importantly, it’s a it was a real musical, not just a movie translated into a musical! While many of the songs have similar fun rhythm and tone, each song was distinct in its own way. Each number included both intricate choreography and complex vocals that were incredibly well done by all the performers.
What makes A Christmas Story, The Musical! different from other musicals is that both the dialogue and the songs were equally hysterical! All the actors, including the young children’s ensemble had impeccable comic timing and wonderful voices. Ralphie, played by Clarke Hallum, was especially impressive. He was in almost every scene, and still kept his energy up and remained a hilarious and adorable little boy!
The show beings with Ralphie about 40 years older, played by Broadway vet Gene Weygandt recalling his best Christmas. The set then jumped to Ralphie’s home in 1940 and the older Ralphie narrated throughout. His family, made up of a hilarious set of characters including his zany Old Man (John Bolton), his frazzled mother (Rachel Bay Jones) and tagalong kid brother Randy (John Francis Babbo).
A Christmas Story, The Musical! will have you in stitches from start to finish! From the opening number “Counting Down to Christmas” to the touching closing Chinese restaurant dinner scene will warm your heart and anyone who has seen the famous lamp scene in the movie can attest to the utter hilarity, and won’t be able to control themselves during “A Major Award”!
A Christmas Story, The Musical! is the perfect holiday treat and embodies the very essence of what it’s like to be a kid on Christmas. Give this hit musical as a gift to anyone your list!
