From the minute I entered the theatre and made my way through a massive mob of crazed fans, I knew this was not just any musical. This was an opportunity for people to be transported back to another time! Audience members donned their favorite band t-shirts and talked excitedly about their favorite 80’s bands, reminiscing back to their high school and college days when sex, drugs and rock and roll were the rules to live by. Best of all, to really bring you back to the good old days, pretend lighters were handed out to sway with to ballads like Poison’s “Every Rose Has It’s Thorn” and REO Speedwagon’s “Can’t Fight This Feeling”. Just when I thought there was no way the crowd could get more excited when they noticed that Jim Peterik of Survivor was in the audience! From then on out, I knew tonight was going to be “Nothin’ but a Good Time”!

The show is directed by Tony Award Nominee Kristin Hanggi with choreography by Kelly Devine. David Gibbs and Ethan Popp wrote the original Arrangements and Orchestrations featuring Beowulf Boritt as the scenic designer. As far as the plot is concerned, it’s very simple, which is great because it really allows the music carry the show. It’s L.A. 1987 on the Sunset Strip. Everyone is anxious to make it big as a rock star, especially Drew (Constantine Maroulis), a guy with bigger aspirations than working behind a bar at The Bourbon Room with his burnout friends, bar owner Dennis (Nick Cordero) and sex-crazed MC, Lonny (Patrick Lewallen), who never fails to add an ample dose of raunchy humor. Just as eager to break out into stardom is Sherrie (Rebecca Faulkenberry), an adorable and innocent blonde who came all the way from Kansas to chase her dream of becoming an actress. Inevitably, Drew and Sherrie fall for each other, but feelings change as Sherrie is swallowed up by the scene, causing her to turn to a world of exotic dancing and liaisons with Stacee Jaxx (Mig Ayesa), the lead singer of the hottest rock band around. However, she soon learns that stripping and being desired by a famous rocker isn’t what she thought it would be, and all the while longs to be with Drew. Meanwhile, Drew is on the road to fame via a boy band. Determined not to sell out and become something he’s not, Drew comes to realize the two things he cares about most in the end: Rock and Roll and Sherrie. A heart-warming love story set to a face-melting soundtrack? That’s what I call rock and roll.
