“Ride for Hope” Preview – Raising Money for NOCC as an Outside Event

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with Juli Scully, a woman with a mission.  She is determined to raise the most money ever for the Illinois Chapter of National Ovarian Cancer Coalition  (NOCC) as an outside event.  Recently she established her own 501c3 charity, “Ride for Hope” which will provide an opportunity for motorcycle riders to raise money.  August 2nd is the day when the first fund-raiser event will take place in Schaumburg.  All funds raised will go to NOCC.

Juli is a 27- year ovarian cancer stage 3 survivor.  She is very dedicated to “giving back” on several levels.  Her salon, JuliAnne’s Salon & Spa, Inc. in Schamburg, provides several special features designed to help survivors going through treatment including a wig room.

Off we go

In addition, Juli is certified with the American Cancer Society’s Look Good Feel Better program. She teaches her courses at Saint Alexis Medical Center

For a number of years, Juli rode a motorcyle with her husband, Jerry, and then, to celebrate the 25th year of being cancer free, she decided she wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle and she did.  For the last two years she has delighted in not only riding with her husband but also with friends from her neighborhood.  Places she has riden include: around Lake Michigan,  Nevada, and the scenic back roads of Illinois & Wisconsin.  Her fellow motorcycle riders have raised money for various charities and Juli thought why not set up a situation where NOCC could benefit also?

Juli's interest in fund raising for NOCC results from the support that she received from others, when she needed many kinds of help.  Learning that NOCC directs a very high percentage of their funds directly to helping to heal and educate-to spread the word-Juli feels this is a cause she wants to support.  I agree with her because I have watched the way this organization has tackled research support and community outreach adding more and more meaningful educational and fund raising events. Juli's sisters, Susan, Laurie,& sister in law Pam,  who were by her side throughout her cancer  treatments, are again by her side again in helping plan and organize this exciting  event along with friends & staff from JuliAnne's Salon and Spa.

I was interested in learning from Juli how treatment has changed over the years.  When she was diagnosed, she needed to have chemotherapy 5 days a week for six months.  Chemotherapy is still given in the IV form, but in very different protocols including pills.

Look what is coming

Juli knows that awareness is the key to saving women's lives affected by ovarian cancer. Realizing this importance, she is planning to do activities seasonally to raise funds that will be used to spread awareness.  As she plans the first fundraiser she is looking for donations and volunteers.  Generous donations up to this time include: HeadRed is providing lunch, pulled pork sandwiches made on premises. Silent Auction with fabulous prizes that include: Overnight stay @ grand ol oprey in Tennessee, luch and tour for 4 @ Napa Valley vineyard, Signed Shaw Blackhawks jersey, other signed Blackhawks memorabilia leather men's Chicago Bears jacket, overnight stay @ Old Jail INN Parke County B&B in Indiana, Conceal & Carry class from Gats Guns, $500 pendant from Wyatt Austin Jewelers, Sons of Anarchy signed shirts and memorabilia, Harley-Davidson gift baskets, and much more!

NOTE:This event will take place rain or shine, ( St. Peter has made their gymnasium available for the party in case of inclement weather). All are invited to St. Peter Lutheran Church  in Schaumburg  for the " after party "
