May 1, 2013 was a lovely warm day in Chicago, just perfect for a Chicago Splash Magazine journalist “Meet & Greet” which was held at the home of Editor, Barbara Keer. Nearly thirty journalists did, in fact, gather to meet and greet. Since most of the journalists' work takes place independently both in the field and on the web, the opportunity to meet one another face to face is infrequent. The opportunity to share experiences and ideas was rewarding and valuable.
Chicago Splash Magazine journalists are enthusiastic fans of Chicago and environs. They love theater events, musical events of all kinds, special events, food events, and they share their travel experiences. Looking at the site, you will also find some very unusual events reviewed.
The first journalist to arrive was Jenny who shared her thoughts about events she covered and those she would hope to cover in the future. Her interests are live music, theater, any thing that is food related and unusual events like the Com Con that was held recently (read all about it).
John and Debbie were the next arrivals and, when Jenny asked what it was that they most enjoyed covering, they shared that their favorite reviews included musical concerts, restaurants, and the Old Town School of Music and some special events.
Justin is the “newest journalist on the block”. He is especially interested in theater and musicals.
Noel has a blog of his own and keeps busy covering all kinds of Chicago events and travel experiences for Chicago Splash Magazine and his blog. His articles often reflect the point of view of his daughter along with his own.
Betsy enjoys musical events and is a fan of “Light Opera Works”.
Adam has a keen interest in opera and classical music, while Ginger and Toby who are dancers, like to review dance or productions that include dance.
Gloria and Leanne like drama, of the Shakespeare variety and/or serious theater. They also like to review dance and music, as well as restaurants and events related to food and wine.
Pat frequently reviews Lyric Opera of Chicago productions, travel articles, theater and musical events of all kinds, while Sharon has a keen interest in anything related to “baby boomers”. Sharon also enjoys light plays and musicals and is working on a book.
Andrew likes to do interviews and has a strong interest in environmental topics and serious theater productions.
Rachel likes to attend galas and special events like local conventions.
Amy is a new journalist but it would be hard to realize this based on the number of reviews she has posted in a very short time. And the reviews are on all topics Chicago, including: Dame Myra Hess Concerts, MCA performances, theater, restaurant reviews, travel, (see where) and more.
Robert is a journalist who joined very recently. He brings a perspective to his articles different from the other journalists in that he is virtually blind and presents a review of a play based on descriptions he receives from a special listening device. Since Robert has been reviewing for Chicago Splash Magazine, I have learned about special computer programs that allow Robert to input his reviews into a required format. (Robert’s review) I have also learned more about theaters and movie houses that offer special devices with auditory input describing the action on the screen or on stage. These theaters also offer special programs for the hearing impaired.
Until Chicago Splash Magazine journalists gather again, check the wide range of topics they cover, including book and CD reviews.
