Preview of Cavalia's Odysseo - A Theatrical Experience Like No Other

My daughter and I drove down to the south parking lot of Soldier Field on a rainy morning to preview something magnificent: Odysseo, Cavalia’s new production, which opens April 1st.  After getting to take in the grandeur of The White Big Top, we were led to the red-carpet arrival of some of the horses and their human co-stars.  It was a big day since the stars of the show, sixty-five horses from around the world, were arriving to their new performance space after a two-week vacation on a farm in Wisconsin. Next, we were treated to a short demonstration by one of the trainers and ten of the horses.  Amazingly, the only commands were given through voice and touch.  The horses didn’t wear bridles or saddles and they worked in very close proximity to their trainer, each other, and the audience.  The weather may have been gloomy, but my daughter and I left super excited to see the show in its full-blown glory.  I mean, who doesn’t love horses, live music, acrobats, stilt walkers, aerialists, and dancers?

The $30 million production of Odysseo is as unique as they come.  It is the largest touring production in the world and utilizes 110 semi-trailer trucks to transport the set and performers.  The audience is met with an enormous stage with décor and effects that are a sumptuous feast for the eyes. The moving interactions between human and horse are at the heart of the action and the training is based on communication, observation and patience.  The tone of the show is one of mutual respect, kindness, and trust.  This is also combined with live music, gravity-defying acrobatics and aerial stunts.
