The Best of Second City Review - A Great Show to Attend

The Second City is known for training some of the funniest people in comedy today. Second City is where it all began for alums such as Tina Fey, Amy Pohler, Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell and many more. This is why The Best of Second City is such a great show to attend. The skits ranged from current events to classic improve games along with fun songs. Its exciting to think that it’s possible that the comedians seen on stage that night could very well be on Saturday Night Live or writing their own sitcom someday.

The Second City

The Best of Second City consisted of many different aspects of sketch and improv comedy, all inducing laugh out loud moments. All the skits where done intermixed with each other, which lead to the audience never experiencing a dull moment. Short, approximately thirty second, sketches were weaved in and out of each larger section. All though they were not lengthy, they did get the biggest laughs throughout the evening, probably because they were so shocking. The longer, more sketch based scenes were far more satirically based then any other parts of the show. Much like Saturday Night Live, these comedies were based on current issues the world is facing today. While they were still hilarious, they also made you think about things in a different way, which is the ultimate goal of satirical comedy. The other segment of the show, and my favorite overall, where the improve scenes. The talented group of comedians took suggestions from the audience and ran with them. It was mind-blowing to watch how they took the suggestions and turned them into large and extended moments. The different games they played kept the audience engaged while watching the actors’ think on their feet and often get shifted to a different scenario within seconds. The cast consisted of five performers, two really stood out in my mind. Andrew Knox and Liz Reuss stole the show and took the stage by storm. Knox had great comedic timing and facial expressions that drew you to him while he was performing. He also had a surprising good singing voice that came in handy during the improvised songs that took place. Reuss also brought a great amount of flair to the stage. She reminded me a lot of a young Molly Shannon as she took command of the stage during her solo improvised sketch. Overall this show displayed an incredible talented cast and made for a very entertaining show.

The Best of Second City

This remarkably funny and fun show performs live on Monday’s and Saturday’s through November 30th, 2015. I would highly recommend anyone who likes to laugh to check this out. You will be very happy you did!
