DISENCHANTED!, review – Old Classics get a Sassy Makeover

The Princesses of DISENCHANTED!

Broadway in Chicago and Starvox Entertainment’s DISENCHANTED! is a laugh out loud musical comedy that puts an edgy and adult spin on our favorite Disney princesses. The ten characters (portrayed by six actresses) express their concern and disappointment in the way they have been represented in popular media. With flare and sass, focusing mainly on the idea of the “princess complex” and longing for more female empowerment, DISENCHANTED!  gives us a new take on what “happily ever after” really means to these women.

Snow White

Cinderella

Sleeping Beauty

Lead by Snow White, the princesses tell us in their own words what happened to them after we stopped watching and what it means to have their lives defined by the men around them. Brought to life by six very talented women, the songs are a time for each character to shine and show what has become of their lives. This is where it begins to shy away from the typical media portrayals and started getting funny. With unique characteristics and personas, each princess comes onto the stage as a vehicle to embrace the irony and challenge that we have grown to expect from each. While the overall production could be described as slightly amateur, the talent onstage was anything but. Each actress has the comic chops and the singing ability to make the thoroughly engaged audience cheer for more. The audience’s delight was best shown during the larger group numbers that happen throughout the production and not only make you want to laugh, but sing along with them. Without a doubt, this musical comedy will bring a smile to your face and make you rethink your idea of what a Disney “happily ever after” really means.

Ariel

Frog Princess

Mulan

Running until June 5th at The Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place, DISENCHANTED! is not to be missed. However, I would caution against bringing kids that are in their “princess phase” because they may be scared by what their favorite princesses have to say.
