The Concours d’Elegance graced the 18th Green of the famed Pebble Beach golf course, adjacent to the visage of The Lodge at Pebble Beach, one day before The Great Solar Eclipse. Top Billing deservedly going to the famed Concours d’Elegance, along with events of Auto Week, throughout Carmel By-the-Sea, and Monterey the week prior.

It was a playground for the wealthy with a plentitude of automobiles for which any `Car Guy’ could only dream of.  On Sunday August 20th, 2017 there were beautiful cars, beautiful people, in a beautiful place, in a simply beautiful dream. Unlike the Eclipse, it happens every year.

The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is one of the most prestigious events of its kind in the world and I was privileged to be there. The Concours is by invitation-only and the competition for awards is intense. More importantly I believe, the weeklong activities serve as fundraisers for charities throughout the Monterey Peninsula. The 2017 Concours events raised $1.7 million for Monterey charities, and since its inception in 1950, have raised more than $23 million, for the Pebble Beach Company Foundation and 85 other local charities.

Next year, August 26, 2018. I’m telling you, get your tickets now. For Car lovers there are events all week long.  Many free, or with minimal cost, for those on a budget.

My favorites autos are the pre-war and European classes, including; Bugatti, Duesenberg, Delahaye, Rolls-Royce’s, and so many others it is impossible to list here.  There was also; Gucci, Chanel, Prada, and every other major fashion designer well represented in the throngs of visitors. The Beautiful People were out en-force, Dressed to impress! I was bedazzled photographing both the cars and the people.

I warn you, it is impossible to see and do everything during Auto Week. So my plan was to enjoy the week before with nominal expenditure. I opted to see the Exhibition at the Carmel Mission Classic on Wednesday, take in the Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex, on Thursday with a viewing on the road, and gazing on the cars up close and personnel in downtown Carmel By the Sea. Finally, on Sunday, The Concours d’Elegance  itself.  Make sure when you go, to go to the website and plan your week in advance. It has a wealth of information, perhaps one of the best event website’s I’ve ever seen. You must allow for lots of people, and lack of parking, and trust that the shuttle busses are the very best way to get around. They were plentiful and reliable.

Not far away, at the Mazda Laguna Seca Racetrack, there was the Monterey Motorsports Reunion. You can take a look at the Article I wrote about last year’s Rolex Reunion at Laguna Seca here. Companies such as, Gooding & Co., Bonham, and Mecum, conducted Auctions throughout Auto Week, selling unbelievable cars, some at unbelievable prices. Perhaps The Auctions, can be the subject of a future Article. Let my publisher know if you are interested in seeing that.

Being there a week before the Concours I got to see the event as if she were undressed. It’s amazing how they erect this little city, buildings and all, out on a golf course. There are restaurants galore and lodging abounds, with everything from the most luxurious, to more modest. For those interested, be sure to check out the fashion and art boutiques in Pebble Beach, Monterey, and Carmel By the Sea, and take some time to relax in one of the plethora of Spas. A good massage will make your skin glow as you show off the new dress you bought just for the Concours ladies. The Monterey Museum of Art, along with The Cannery are also wonderful, and a quick jaunt into Monterey

While my favorites are the old classics, the modern classics as well as exotics are also well represented. Ferrari seemed to steal that show, with its exhibition of Italian machismo showcasing 70 years of History.  Out on the lawn you could also preview a 20’ long, Mercedes Maybach 6 Concept Car. It is a stunning Cabriolet and perhaps and ode to the Bugatti lines of long ago. There was also a new Rolls Royce somewhat alone, yet still stunning. Not to be outdone was the Volkswagen Mini Buss, a Retro Redo with Surfboards and all. I see it as a new autonomous hybrid of the future. And truly unique in concept and design was the `Hot Rod'  Prototype 9 by Infinity

Another event, RetroAuto at The Inn at Spanish Bay, has long been a hit with those seeking collectables and auto memorabilia. There were art shows, panels, legends, and cars. You might even sneak in a round of golf on one of the Legendary Courses  nearby. And only for 2017, if you stayed an extra day, you got to see a once in a lifetime event, The Solar Eclipse. Honestly for me, the celebrities and the Eclipse paled in comparison to viewing some of the most beautiful designs and craftsmanship in automobile history right in front of me.  The only thing that could have made it better would be to touch them, to sit in them, and to drive them. Alas my dreams know no end.
