Westin Southfield Detroit Review – Classic Elegance and Complete Comfort

A welcoming lobby

On the occasion of Ruth Davis’ 94th birthday, Lawrence Davis, Founder and Publisher of LA Splash Magazine and Splash Magazines Worldwide and Barbara Keer, Editor of Chicago Splash Magazine joined her in Southfield, Michigan. Arriving at Detroit's Metro Airport, the first stop was Hertz (hertz.com/1.800.654.3131) where we secured a comfortable Chevrolet Malibu with a "neverloss" system that made getting to The Westin Southfield Detroit Hotel and finding additional locations, a breeze.  A stay of three nights at the Westin Southfield was invigorating, revitalizing and indulgent.  Though no birthday events were planned at the hotel, having its facilities available greatly enhanced the visit and the celebration.

A wedding begins in the lobby

It is a beautiful hotel that was built thirteen years ago and has been awarded plaques for excellence the last four years.  It is a favorite for weddings (we saw two), and offers numerous meeting rooms, a 68-person tiered seating conference center and an elegant 5,000 square foot ballroom and much more.  The décor and design features are immediately noticeable, envelop the visitor entering the lobby and continue throughout the hotel. There is a flavor of Art Nouveau with the look and feel consistent with the "motor City" in its grandeur. The lobby is further welcoming with  delicious pink lemonade and a large bowl of apples.

A wonderful visit begins

There are 388 non-smoking recently refurbished guest rooms and suites.  We found the rooms to be extremely comfortable in size and features.  Renowned Heavenly Bed® with a pillow top mattress and cozy down comforter were introduced in 1999, and heavenly showers in 2001. We loved both of them. The in room coffee maker with complimentary Starbucks® coffee and Tazo tea was another pleasant feature.

That "heavenly" shower

Westin’s goal is that guests leave feeling better than when they arrived. This was certainly true for our visit.  From Breathe Westin™, the smoke-free initiative that began in January 2006, to unwind(SM)… a Westin evening ritual, there is an effort to develop programs that help guests be at their best in mind, body, and spirit.  We were feeling so good, we didn't want to leave.

Breakfast - a great way to begin

The birthday celebration began with the “birthday girl” joining the out-of-town guests for breakfast at Tango’s, the hotel restaurant.  I was amazed at how the chef prepared plain old scrambled eggs and hash brown potatoes and how it turned into gourmet fair.  Our small group enjoyed every bite of all the food we ordered.  There were several individuals in wheelchairs also very much enjoying  breakfast, a tribute to the acccessibility of hotel and restaurant.

A relaxing visit

Continuing on for a visit in Mr. Davis’ suite, we walked through the halls and “Ruth” commented that the halls were wonderful, curving, interesting and bright.  After visiting in the conversation area of the suite, everyone was so comfortable they didn’t want to leave.  But leave, we did,  to experience the pleasures of the whirlpool, which turned out to be very pleasant and therapeutic.

Workout, or water recreation and a sauna nearby

The WestinWORKOUT® Powered by Reebok Gym with a range of equipment to choose from was great to have availabe 24 hours.  The free Wireless High Speed Internet Access available in public areas was in continual use much appreciated.  The staff very friendly and helpful and the elevators,  unusually responsive.  There was virtually no waiting from one point to another at any time.

A welcoming lobby

Addition features include: 20 minutes Northwest of Detroit Metro Airport, near several highways leading to major attractions, 24 hour front desk, free covered parking, handicapped accessible rooms, 24 hour business center facilities, tour desk with concierge, iron/ironing board and hair dryer in rooms, meeting facilities.  We enjoyed our stay here so much; this may become an annual event.
