The Meritage Resort and Spa in Napa, California is a little like the wine they produce and sell. You don’t know how good it is until you try it! The 2008 Trinitas Zinfandel they generously give each guest was outstanding, as was our stay at this special resort.
Our superior king room included a large patio overlooking the central courtyard, and views of the entrance to their underground caves and the hillside vineyards, which are topped by a huge sculpture of a man crushing grapes. Each room is equipped with a refrigerator, desk, safe and high speed internet. The hotel is dog-friendly.
Walking outside the property toward the caves, we noticed that preparations were underway for an outdoor wedding party. It was indeed a beautiful setting. We easily found the path leading up into the vineyards for a walk. It is a relatively short and pleasant hike with informative signs describing the grapes and the wine to be produced. The path curves around the various vine sections and eventually comes to a rotunda where you can relax, or even enjoy a picnic.
Further exploration took us up to the Grape Crusher sculpture, whose silhouette creates an aura of wine mysticism to the hillside. It is especially potent with the sun behind it, as if this one man speaks for the multitude of wine workers and their efforts at producing the perfect product. Overlooking The Meritage, it affirms its relationship to the wine country.
The resort’s underground caves contain Spa Terra, banquet rooms and the Trinitas Tasting Room, as well as temperature controlled barrel rooms for aging their wines. The hotel has its own vineyards and wine labels, including the excellent Trinitas 2008 Zinfandel.
The Meritage is a deceptively understated wine-country destination. You don’t realize the extent of the services and facilities when you first arrive, so a “tour” with the concierge is enlightening. We were delighted with Victoria, who took the time to fully inform us all about The Meritage’s many features. This included an invitation to take the seminar on time-sharing which rewards you with a variety of gifts and travel options. The hotel has a large heated pool, fire-pit and bocce court.
The Meritage has the distinction of being the only hotel to have a spa located inside a cave. Spa Terra provides the cool, quietness of being underground in a luxury setting which includes a relaxation lounge, ten treatment rooms, whirlpools, steam grottos and soothing water walls. Of course, there are couples rooms if you want to be with your sweetheart while getting an exotic massage.
Their restaurant, Siena, utilizes ingredients from local organic farms, including farm-raised beef and artisan cheeses, for a creative California/Italian flair. The Meritage Bar offers small food plates along with its full service drink menu. Wine tasting is better experienced in the Trinitas Tasting Room in the caves, where you can taste wine samples and buy bottles of your favorites. And of course, take one back to your room for a romantic room-service dinner.
One of the facilities of this hotel is Our Lady of the Grapes Wedding Chapel. This is a delightfully warm setting for getting married. Afterwards, there are several reception areas including the Estate Cave and the Vineyard Terrace for an outdoor affair. A special feature of The Meritage is the Wedding Planning Services offered through their catering department. In addition to planning your ceremony and reception, they will recommend and arrange rehearsal dinners, guest activities, and menus for guests staying at the resort.
The Meritage is located a little outside of downtown Napa, on Route 29 south of the many wineries heading towards Sonoma and points north. Like other aspects of this resort, its slightly under-the-radar location defines the charm and quality of The Meritage. We enjoyed our stay and were happily surprised to find all the distinctive features of this friendly resort, spa and winery.
