The origins and inspiration for Delano Las Vegas might have risen from its namesake in South Beach, but once it hit Nevada, this beautiful hotel became all Las Vegas. If you are going to bring something new to Vegas nowadays, it better be stunning and unique. Delano is both: a jaw dropper at first glance, yet also a boutique hotel experience with nothing but beautiful suite after beautiful suite.
You will get a sense that Delano Las Vegas is different the moment you approach it, as the entrance greets you with a magnificent divided boulder from the Nevada desert. Moving into Delano you continue to feel as if you are really in the desert. The walkway is surrounded by the beauty of the Mojave Desert, and, once inside, you will quickly gain an appreciation for Delano's intimacy. Their cozy lobby is almost the opposite of the behemoth lobbies you have undoubtedly experienced everywhere else in Las Vegas. Gaming and smoke free, Delano takes you away from the typical strip feel of Las Vegas, indulging you in every other way possible.
Delano Las Vegas can truly say there is not a bad room in the building, as the average room size is a whopping 725 square feet. The one-bedroom suite features a private bedroom with a spacious spa-style bath, and you will get spoiled with the adjoining living room that has a 46” flat-screen TV, wet bar, desk and its own powder room, making this the perfect spot to invite guests over before a night on the town. There is no more “I don’t really care about the room because I am not going to spend much time in it.” Delano will spoil you and you will quickly find you are going to love spending time in your room.
The rooms definitely bring a little of South Beach to you by showcasing the clean feel with whites and neutrals, beautiful underwater photography on the walls, and floor-to-ceiling windows that give you the perfect view of the Las Vegas skyline. If you are looking for a little more than a suite, the panoramic penthouse is spectacular. The view is in the name, and these rooms will certainly make you feel like a Vegas high roller with all of the amenities. The final touch for those of you who can't leave who without your dog, Delano offers a dog friendly suite just for you.
Once you make your first visit to Delano you can’t help but be struck by the beautiful lounge, Franklin, located in the lobby. This is anything but your typical lobby bar and once you become a regular you will want to keep this one all to yourself as your personal treasure because this is soon to become a must-go-to spot for a cocktail and conversation. The dark and intimate setting is brought to life by the gold lighting accents. While conversation and a craft cocktail make for a wonderful start to the evening, Franklin also has some amazing DJs performing to keep you from having to leave this stunning lounge to be entertained elsewhere.
The trend for cocktails has reversed from the sweet and simple to classic flavors, and the cocktails are as complex and flavorful as some of the dishes you will find anywhere in Las Vegas. It all begins with the top shelf of Delano. There are top shelves at bars and then there is the top shelf at Delano, and you will know the difference because at Delano, you are going to see bottles you aren’t likely to find anywhere else. Not only are you going to find a custom Glen Moray scotch, a Woodford Reserve Double Oaked bourbon and Delano’s hand-selected Black Barrel Mt. Gay rum, but one of the best parts of Franklin is that they create cocktails by aging the ingredients in oak barrels. You are always in for a surprise because once a barrel is gone, it is gone, and they are onto another cocktail creation. If you prefer wine, Mandalay Bay Director of Wine Harley Carbery has brought in a number of one-of-a-kind wines exclusively for Delano, and if Harley is giving these wines his approval, that is good enough for me. Add more than two dozen craft beers by the bottle to choose from, and you have a beverage list that is hard to beat in all of Las Vegas.
The cocktail of choice at Franklin has to be Mr. Hyde. One sip and you will be hooked. Subtly sweet, Mr. Hyde is formulated with Oxley Gin, St. Germain, passion fruit, pineapple, lemon juice and kaffir, leaving you with a memorable plethora of flavors. Franklin also gives a little love to Delano South Beach with the additions of the South Beach Sunrise and Mojito Cubano to its cocktail menu. Finally, the Delano Daiquiri brings a little bit of South Beach, a little history and of course, a unique spirit. The Delano Daiquri uses Bacardi 1909 Heritage Rum, a limited-edition spirit that pays tribute to Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, who founded the Bacardi brand and redefined rum in Cuba more than 150 years ago.
Also located in the lobby area of Delano you’ll find Della’s Kitchen and 3940 Coffee + Tea. Sadly, Della’s Kitchen is only open for breakfast and lunch, but after one of their breakfasts you might be quite content with that as you might be too full to eat the rest of the day. Della’s Kitchen has pancakes to appease any lumberjack, chicken and waffles and probably the best steak and eggs in all of Las Vegas. Make sure to order a Bloody Mary on one of your visits to Della’s Kitchen as you will get an extra tasty surprise on the side – well worth it! Della’s Kitchen is all about local and fresh ingredients and you can taste the quality in every dish, making it the perfect way to start your Delano day. 3940 Coffee + Tea offers gourmet coffee and teas from Grand Avenue Specialty Coffee along with fresh pastries and breakfast sandwiches so big that you better bring a friend to share with.
Delano is ready for your visit, but they are still putting together some projects to take the experience even higher in the near future. Among the changes will include one that takes you up to the 64th floor and one of the best views in all of Las Vegas. What has been home to miX, will soon becoming Rivea. Rivea will serve French and Italian cuisine from internationally celebrated chef Alain Ducasse, who will bring in flavors and colors of the Riviera in this setting that provides stunning panoramic views of the city. You can look for Rivea to open winter 2014-2015.
Delano Las Vegas is also going to give its guests their own private pool experience with that South Beach feel, beginning in 2015 as it will open near the sand and surf of Mandalay Bay Beach and wave pool.
Of course one of the best parts of Delano is while you get a luxurious locale to vacation in that sets itself apart from the rest of the strip, you are about 200 yards away from the Mandalay Bay property and all of its amazing amenities. When it comes to Mandalay Bay you really don’t have to leave the property to enjoy the best that Las Vegas has to offer. This is home to my personal favorite show in the entire city, Michael Jackson ONE™ by Cirque du Soleil. For nightlife you have Light, and for a dayclub, Daylight, and then of course all of the amazing pools that Mandalay Bay has to offer. Finally you will find a dining lineup that you could put up against any resort in all of Las Vegas. You can choose from: Stripsteak from Michael Mina, Kumi by Chef Akira Back, Fleur by Hubert Keller, Border Grill from Mary Sue Milliken and Susan Feniger. That is just beginning; the list goes on and on and you don’t just get the names, you get food that lives up to those names.
Mandalay Bay very well might have saved the best for last as Delano is clearly the crown jewel finale to finish off the rebirth of this property. You know you are in for a good time when you can’t keep track of all of the things to love about this property, and if I missed a few, well that just leaves more for you to be surprised by on your visit.
